Another P-car?
Maybe it had a little to do with the SUV thread. Maybe I'm just becoming more miserly in my old age.
Tomorrow I'm going to look at a rather ordinary 944 (I don't yet know if I'm allowed to say that on the 944 BBS). No 'S', no turbo. I have my 911 hot rod, track car - almost. I'm dumping my big ol' Tahoe. I figure I can rent a tow vehicle 3 times a year when needed and save the equivalent of a small salary per month. Insanity? Perhaps. |

From what I've seen you can say just about anything on the 944 board.
![]() Seriously though, why not. My wife has a 944 as her daily driver, including thru the winter with a set of studded snow tires. She spends about $1000 total a year on maintenance and it is a hoot to drive. No S, no turbo just a 1986. Just spend as much time looking for a good one as you would for a 911, maybe more since a lot of 944 owners aren't as *nal about maintenance as 911 owners. Robert |

I agree, I also had a "Normal" 944 and it was a great car. To be honest, it handled and braked better then my 911. It was just a little, ok alot short on HP.

I agree with NMARSH. The 944 overall probably handles consistently better than the 911 due to its neutral handling. The regular models do lack power but the Turbo and S models are pretty unbeatable.
As a daily driver, it's probably a better choice. But I found it just a bit boring - largely because it is so consistent and even handling. |

Well I got it. A plain ol' '84 944 (I'm told water is used somewhere in 'em). It is a bit ... 'un-quick' compared to the 911, but further testing is indicated. Perhaps another 300 miles tomorrow...
Has anyone else noticed the need to keep your foot on the throttle at all times? |

A final comment - 'boring' is not necessarily bad. Especially for a daily driver. Compare to 'exciting' 911's which always have things happening to them which keep them off the road (not mine, thankfully). |

Are you talking about the trusty 914? (note the first 'T' is silent)

Can anyone comment on the 928, specifically the "GT" model? Are these a bit above the standard 928 in many ways, or just a "branding" exercise?
Thanks much, Jw |

I had an early 85. The trick to making it go is to keep the revs over 3000, otherwise you will think it's slow. If you have the shift indicator light, ignore it!

From BA, market update in Excellence:
" For 1990 the 5-speed version of the 928 was called the 928GT.. power increased to 330hp or 10hp more than the automatic, via more aggressive camshafts, lightweight twin pipe exhaust. 928GT had a short-ratio manual transmission, all 1990's had a electronic LSD, 1991 same HP figures" Recommendation is to avoid cars prior to 1987. Z-Man, I dont have a 944 anymore, got a speeding ticket three days after I got it and it was downhill after that.I kept the car for another 6 months before my insurance became more then my car payment. That was 14 years ago and the car car stayed in the family intil about two years ago. Great little car. My wife mentioned yesterday that she would like one as a daily driver. That would be really cool.

My brother used to have a '86 944. It's a great track car from stock. Very easy to drive and it has a working A/C too. I'd like to have one if I got extra cash. A clean one may well be under 8K, but finding a clean one it's not easy neither. Like Robert said " Keep up with those belts!" My brother had a broken timing belt and bended most of the valves and had the whole head rebuilt.
