Motor mount help

I've got an 83 sc coupe and im looking to replace all 4 motor and trans mounts in hopes of improving some inconsistent shifting. P-car is a weekend driver and not used on the track. The motor mounts look original. Looking through our host I'm finding several non-solid mount options and could use advice on the best option to tighten things up but not be overly noisy. PP has OEM mounts, OEM for the cabriolet that are a bit stiffer, a poly-graphite set, and the WEVO with black or blue rubber. Like to not spend too much on these but want to do it right so any guidance is welcome and thanks, Tim

We have used the Cabrio Mounts for some time now and they seem to be a very cost effective way of tightening up the power train mountings.

I have never been a PU bush enthusiast and we have exclusively used Cabrio Mounts for about 7 years now and fitted them to a large number of cars and have many customers that are happy with the choice.

I have the Cabrio mounts as well.

Honestly, I didn't feel that much difference after installation. My OEM mounts were not "shot" but were original so I replaced them during one of the engine drop sessions.

If shifting inconsistencies are the issue you might want to start with the shifter and linkage (bushings, couplers, etc.) instead of engine mounts. That was my experience with shifting issues, but you may have looked at those items already.

+1 check the bushings and coupler first then mounts but Cabriolet on the gear box and Standard on the engine mounts.

+1 on the Cabrio mounts. A nice compromise between stock and solid.

As others have mentioned, if you have not already done so, you will want to replace ALL of your shifter bushings(Cup, rod, and coupler) in the interest of getting it all done correctly.

This is all pretty easy to do, and would be a nice winter project.

But, and this is a big "but". Do not expect miracles. What you are doing here is covering all bases, short of transmission work.

Motor Mount help

Guys, thanks for the input. Yes, I did replace all the shifter and coupler bushings, which did help a lot. my next steps are a better WEVO coupler and the motor mounts. DRACO, what is the reason to go with Cabrio mounts for the trans only and stay with stock for the engine?

Thanks, Tim

As I understand it, the Targa and Coupe do not have the stabilizer bar to absorb the engine vibration. So us coupes and targas need the softer thicker OEM mounts to limit the engine vibration.

We use Cab mounts at the gear box to limit the slop and better insure precise shifting if all other components are healthy.

Jim, you are still a stud. I'm working up a plan to install an RSR rear engine mount from Rebel and didn't consider the front mounts in the equation. Will have to swap them out at the same time.

Any opinions on running a Coupe or RSR cross-bar on a Cabrio? I want light weight and don't care about vibration.

Can someone give me the Porsche part number for the cabrio motor/transmission motor mounts. I can't seem to find them in the PP catalog.

I did OEM cab/sport mounts at both motor and trans in my targa in 2 stages.

Did the motor first leaving the trans stock. Really nice upgrade for the money that crisped up throttle response. Even though my stock mounts were not shot, I could tell (and still can) the difference in throttle response. And things don't seem to get 'squishy' when everything is super hot in the summer... Previously, you could kind of feel the increased deflection in the old mounts when really hot as I think the rubber became more pliable. That went away which is nice. Absolutely no issue with any kind of vibration. A nice tighten up.

I then did the trans mounts maybe a year later. Minor (at best) shifting improvement and not much else. Sometimes I feel like I notice some increased (very subtle) trans noise/vibration when idling in neutral and I let the clutch out and the trans starts churning, but nothing to get annoyed about. In my case, the mount change here was not nearly as impactful as the motor mount change.

All of this done probably 8-9 years ago and no issues and overall one of the easiest, cheapest upgrades that made a noticeable difference.

Did you notice any shifting improvement from the motor mounts alone?

Your welcome.

I did both mounts in my 82 SC at the same time and did notice that the engine moved less during reving and shifting. My mechanic also comment about the stiffness. Some of this change may have been just replacing the original mounts.
