Motor Mounts

I'm the Newbie with the '69 911. Just got the corrected title back, going to emissions on Monday, then straight to DMV, assuming it passes. If not, straight to Storz. Regular every day plates, no fancy stuff.

Is changing motor mounts a DIY job, assuming I have all the proper tools? They have to be changed and seems like a good item to cross off the list.

The carrier mount is probably good, no need to change it other than the red stainless steel one looks really cool. Does it increase the difficulty or just time element to change it?

There are motor mount choices:

OE Supplier for $42 for standard mounts

Meyle for $110 for heavy duty mounts

PORSCHE for $220 for OEM, with a disclaimer of weak welds under stress

I'm inclined to go with Meyle, since I want to drive the piss out of it, respectfully and with purpose, of course. The savings get me a new stainless steel engine carrier mount. I doubt the original is on there.

Not much time has been spent in here. That's changing.

Yours look past due. The carrier will be extra work, I wouldn't change it unless the ends are bent. I can't remember if the '69 mounts screw into the carrier or have a separate bolt underneath.

It's a DIY job. I've done it on a few 911s. I once bought the OE standard mounts but they started failing after a few years so I replaced them with Genuine Porsche mounts, should have done that in the first place.

Make sure the engine is well supported underneath. Lots of people over tighten the small nuts (to the vehicle) and strip them or snap them. They don't need much torque. Loosen one mount, remove it, and replace with a new one. Snug up the big nut but not final tightening. Then do the other mount. Then do the final torque on both.

I'm sure a search here will pull up more threads on the subject. Have fun.

Sweet, I'm on it. Parts ordered. No new carrier. Forget fluff for now.

Try to soak with penetrating fluid, if bolt chatters, stop immediately and turn forward, tap on nut and try again, spray more fluid.

Thanks. Parts ordered. Tomorrow, tear apart the peripherals on the motor and make it look new.

If carrier does not bend, use a big screw driver to align the hole to put the nut back on. Do not worry carrier is meant to flex laterally

Thanks...have appointment with Storz to do all fluid change on Thursday, might as well change all belts as he sees fit, while we're at it.

Hope someone with more experience chimes in.

Edit: Thanks Jeff. (next post below) (I was wrong, threaded on newer cars)

Got the two pieces.

If I support the engine with a block of wood between the jack and the engine, can the carrier mount be completely removed for inspection, and re-painting or replacing? Both books I have so far have nothing on the subject.

Nice. That site has lots of goodies for the wish list. Those mounts would look good with this piece:

What's the difference between the racing ones and the heavy duty ones?

Looks like there are four bolts holding the carrier mount to the engine. Anything else hidden in there?

Don't trust just the jack to support the engine for longer than temporary use.

It's just the four bolts for the carrier but you might have exhaust components in the way.

+1 on inspecting the carrier; look closely at the ends where it attaches to the motor mounts.

The ends of mine fatigued and stress cracked at about 250k miles.

I split the difference and used 2 Club Sport mounts and 2 Wevo mounts. You don't need really stiff mounts for the street and the stiffer ones transmit a lot of vibration.

I'm happy with the compromise.

Thanks for all the recommendations. Again, awesome forum to be a member of.

I'll use the stock ones for now. I was talking to a member, a new Porsche friend here, who says dropping the engine is not that big of a deal, once you get the peripherals off and that is all I can think about now. Drop that puppy, detail it and the engine bay back to show room, refurb some parts, throw some OEM new parts, some performance parts at it. How's that sound? Like a good next winter project. We're too close to spring and summer to pull the motor for several months.

Recommendations on engine stands? I usually start at Harbor Freight.

I noticed I did not have an 18mm wrench or socket, so I took care of that deficiency. A credo, one cannot own too many tools.

The task was super easy. I'll have to redo it. The little things are getting me. I could have just ordered new washers, but no, and then no flat black paint. I just wanted to finish it and drive it, not go to Home Depot in the middle of the task.

Since I'm going to redo it, maybe I'll go a little bling and get a set of WEVO's. I didn't see them when I bought the first set. Might as well pull the carrier and paint it too.

The engine bay is filthy and I have limited range of motion. I cannot physically get my arms in there to clean it. Rotator cuffs gone, both sides. The motor has to come out, but not until next winter, I'm driving it. I mentioned to Bob at Storz. He'll let me pull it down there, keep it for me, let me detail it there and I can haul the car back to my garage and move into the engine bay.

I'll be taking my meals in the garage thank you very much.

How I like engine bays to look

I'ld say they were past due, the top piece of rubber was completely gone.
