So it begins...

It Starts with the Triangle of death oil leak, so I dropped the engine yesterday.

After firstPressure wash - What do you call this mount? I will need a new one.

Now for the had work...
and all the extra "while I am there work..."

That's one of the rubber CIS airbox mounts. There's 2 of them. One on each side. Mine had collapsed to the point where the whole CIS system had sagged and was sitting on top of the shroud. Eventually the metal pipe at the rear rubs on the top of the oil cooler shroud and gets a hole in it causing a big vacuum leak.

Here it is from our host - Mount for air filter housing 1982 Porsche 911 SC Targa - Intake System - Page 1

I dropped my '82 SC engine last winter due to an oil leak. It turned out to be the rear main seal as expected.

While i was in there i replaced the clutch, the flywheel is it had stress cracks, the clutch fork and various gaskets within the "triangle", the injector sleeves/seals and various hoses.

The rest was hard work and a bit of paint.

No more oil leaks and the engine and engine bay look great.

Good luck - it's worth the effort.

Before.......

After......

Craig, Beautiful job!
Did you paint the intake runners?
How do you get by without heat in Scotland?

Clean up and discovery

So I am not thinking this is all from ToD...
looks like a lot of oil inside the bell

and all over the clutch.

Now I just need a Flywheel socket.

The switch which is missing in the pic was for the "trunk"? light.
The intake runners were painted with grey primer from the gun, a bright wheel silver which really pops from an aerosol (because it was lying on the shelf getting in the way) then some clear laquer to make sure it stays clean. The runners don't get that hot so the paint is unaffected by the heat.....still looks good.
Kool aid.....don't take any chances here. Replace the rear main seal(crank seal) and the gearbox output shaft seal. Carefully inspect the clutch, flywheel and guide tube for wear. You don't want to do this twice!
Looking forward to the pictures as you progress......you've done the hardest part.

Anyway

I have been tearing down, bagging and labeling everything and finally get to the main issue, oil leaks.
Rear main seal that is - Pulley end

I have the seal for the crank...
But who thinks I should replace the gasket on the lower cover seen here?

Anyone know what this cover is called?

Take a look at the old guide and see the position of the seal and match in when you replace it. Not sure but your guide tube should have a little divet to tell you where the new seal should sit.

If I were you, locate a good machine shop and have the fly wheel grounded and balanced, they may want the new pressure plate to match it but it is not needed but if you have OCD, do it like I did

As far as IMS gasket, good idea to replace that and the crank pulley seal while you are there and for preventive measures, use JB weld around the tip of the engine halves, down the two half circles and about 1 inch down the halves, that #8 bearing seal behind the half circle could be leaking from your pics. Let the jb Weld cure over night before adding oil. She should be leak free there from know on.

Be very mindfull of the pulley torque, here a little more is better. You do not want that bolt o come loose. Some medium to lite strengh lock tite, would not hurt, just not red, as it will be a real PITA to remove it in the future.

Thanks of the feedback DRACO, I was looking into this and did not see the O ring for my 81 year model, only newer... does it have one.

Not the way to start the Morning

Beautifull Sunday morning and I am thinking replace the throw out bearing shaft seal and O-Ring...
Never done this before but I am pretty sure that is not suppose to be there.

It is magnetic so I am thinking speedometer pick-up

Guess I should be glad it did not get into the gears.

Any suggestions on trainsmission shops around Houston?

Oh geez, so did your speedo work?

Yeah, that should be there at all, wow.

As far as O-ring, see that grove on the outside of the TOB, that s where it goes.

If you look inside the TOB, you can clearly see the culprit seal was leaking. Keep the old one as a press in tool for the new gasket, use some silglyde and tap it in with the old seal and deep socket the same OD.

Plenty of Houston Pelicans that can recommend a shop.

Speedo was off. I thought it was from t calibration when I have the gear replaced last year.
I can see the Magnet wheel (Is that want it is called?) through the TOB hole and count 3 missing magnets. Wonder where the other 2 are... They must be in the diff. Right?

Can I remover the side plate on the different without changing the tolerate on the ring gear?

I have found many threads on the subject today but no replacement part.

I'm taking my gearbox to Jones Autowerks in San Antonio on Wednesday. What do you need a transmission guy for?
