Questions about 89 Targa in Atlanta GA area

Hey all,

A fellow Pelican recommended I start a thread about this Targa in the Atlanta area to see if someone knows the car, was interested and looked at it, and/or can take a look for me.

https://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/dealer/porsche/911/1856445.html

I've spoken once to the dealer and he mentioned:
--compression test returned 180s on 5 cylinders and 140 on the sixth. Didn't provide leak-down %;s, but may have missed that part of my question
--small leak in targa-top front driver's-side
--current owner drove it last 15K as daily driver, but prior owner had it sitting in collection

Another Pelican is going to try to get over to look at it, but again, we thought it wise to see what others might already know and/or be willing to stop into the dealer and check it out.

Thanks,
Kevin

180s on 1-5 are typical of a carbon built up cylinder readings, 140 is a definite concern, possibly a leak at the valves and or the rings but a leak down will point you in the best direction. Any evidence of leaks like below, if dealer recently washed the engine, it will be more difficult to tell.

Leaky Targa Top, not too difficult to address as log as top has never blown off.

Bottom line, No Leak Down Test, No Deal.

Take your time and find a healthy engine & gear box to enjoy.

Appreciate the insight and advice. Complete agree...especially about the need for patience.

Hi Kevin -

I'm driving from Florida to our midtown Atlanta office later today, if I can find time maybe I can get by there tomorrow. Looks like a great example to consider.

Targa's are fantastic if you like the top down - mine is NEVER on!

Certainly appears to be a well cared for, all original car. Good luck.

Motorcar Studio is a reputable operation. I have met the fellas that run it. I cannot speak for the car itself, but I can vouch for the quality of inventory they normally carry.

Kevin, did you buy it?

I sent them an email about stopping by tomorrow and they replied it just sold.

Nope! I was thankfully cautioned about some details of engine work it needed. I just hope the buyer had found the issue and paid a price in line with the work required.

Thanks again for reaching out and offering to help!
