Later 3.2 Carrera kidney bowls in early (1973) car

I am about to do a full restoration on a 1973 911 Targa, that was converted to a later look and is now going back to stock but as a mild hot rod. We are likely also replacing the kidney bowls. Has anyone used the later 3.2 Carrera kidney bowls in an earlier car?

Since the early Targa needs all the help it can get in the stiffening department, I would think that the later kidney bowls would provide some extra stiffening in the right place. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Comparison pictures posted below. The later kidney bowls also reinforce the jack area, while the early kidney bowls do not.

I dont know, but I'm interested in what you find out. Seems like a good idea and I can;t think of any obvious reason why it shouldn't work out. Will be welding on my '68 targa soon and will give it a try, depending on your experience.

Yes, it does help.

There was a thread long ago about chassis reinforcements and this was one of the easy modifications if you are making repairs.

The later support panel creates an additional box section to tie in the "corner" of the lower door latch panel.

IMO, if you are having to weld a new panel in place - then use the latest version.

I’d suggest looking at the repair gallery on classiccarreras.com, an excellent shop in Ireland that does this kind work every day. They show everything ... great tutorials

Here you go, exactly what you’re asking:

I think Classic Carreras said on the DDK that they add the later kidneys to all their restos
