Wheel studs
Is it necessary to replace the wheel studs (with longer) when adding wheel spacers. I'm contemplating 20mm spacers on the rear axle. Thx

why spacers? Just add (whatever size) adapters. Adapter bolts to existing bolts, wheels bolt to adapter, very easy way less hassle.

Unless the spacer you are planning are relatively 'thin' I would suggest you use a Hubcentric design as it is much safer than a long stud.

Hugh: just go on Pel Parts catalog - you can look them & see what they look like. I've got, If I remember, 31 mm's on the back fit perfect, only took about 40 min's to put all 4 on!!!

Spacers can be thin as 3mm or as wide as are available in the marketplace. The determining factor is if the wheel studs engage the lug nuts adequately. If a simple spacer plate more than 3mm is installed between rotor and wheel, I suggest installing longer wheel studs.
Thicker spacers (~25mm or more) typically have their own stud arrangement that when installed, usually maintain an adequate amount of lug nut engagement. Sherwood |

Have you tried putting the ~20mm spacer on the rear yet? I think you'll find that when you place the wheel on the axle, you can't even get the lug nut to grab the threads
If your car is a typical "narrowbody" car, the original studs are 45mm long. So if you add 20mm of spacer, you need an additional 20mm of stud = 65mm. For comparison purpose, I bought H&R 14mm spacers and with them they provided 66mm studs. I've also installed 28mm 930 spacers on the rear of Carreras and used 930 rear studs that are 72mm long. 45 + 28 = 73 = close enough since that's what Porsche provided for the 930. I recall this thread provided a nice photo tutorial and as luck would have it RoyB's link still works. Wheel Stud replacement...A pictoral..

Thanks guys. I haven't purchased spacers so I was just gathering information in the event I want to go in that direction. You've all been very helpful.

The factory used 21mm spacers on several cars and coupled them with 66mm long studs.
