Opinion of a Bursch sport muffler

A very reputable Porsche mechanic has recommended modifying my stock exhaust set up on my 83 911 SC to SSI's with a Bursch sport muffler.

Anyone have any experience with this particular setup?

Thanks

You're less than 100 miles from me, let me set you up with an M&K.

I'd countenance rarly's advice. M&K is a quality piece. Bursch is okay..

I have an "80 SC with SSi backdated to '74 with a Bursch muffler. Love it. Pops, crackles and makes other fun noises on overrun and downshifts, has a slightly higher-pitched tone than others I have heard (too low, sound like a diesel!). Mine was on the car when I bought it 23 years ago and was the deal-sealer!

I have an old Bursch and headers on my '78 SC. It's great but have no M&K experience to compare.

I had a Bursch on my 83SC, loved it ! really made a difference. It was about 15 years ago,so my choices were limited with my budget.

I've said this multiple times, and I will say it again: there is no sweeter sound on earth than a set of SSI coupled to an M&K 2/2. It was the best set up I've ever had from a pure sound enjoyment perspective. Naturally, it's subjective, and YMMV. But I'm tellin' ya...

I have the 2 in/1 out Bursch that uses the single Walker Dynomax Turbo muffler paired with early heat exchangers and I'm happy with it. I really like the sound both at idle and when getting on it and no drone at all at speed. A few things to note are that you'll need to repaint parts of it with high temp paint after the factory paint burns off. I'd also recommend doubling the gaskets at the heat exchanger connection to prevent leaks. A couple of 5 1/2" band clamps from Home Depot work well to support the weight when run around the top exhaust tube and the factory exhaust hanger bracket.

A friend of mine here in town has the Bursch on his '73 T with stock heat exchangers. I really like the sound of the car, not too loud but still nicer than stock. If I could make my 3.2 sound like his car while keeping my stock catalyst, I'd do it.

I took a look at the Bursch but knew it would probably need re-coated to have any longevity. Didn't want to deal with that. Went M&K.

I have a Bursch on my 1973 2.7 MFI RS tribute. Been there for 16 years or so. I have to say that there is no sweeter sound on earth than this Bursch muffler on stock heater boxes!!!!

My set up is 3 "glasspack" tubular mufflers. 2 small ones before the "Y" connection and one larger one across the back. The fiberglass damping material is long gone so the system sounds awesome.

Mine is a special smaller diameter that takes the flat spot out of the MFI set up.

I would not change it for anything and have drive over 120,000 miles since I installed it.....like 15 years ago. I did remove it a few years ago to put in a wideband sensor bung for my AFR instrument.

Yes it does need some VHT muffler paint from time to time.

Bursch is made in Pasadena CA and Doug Robinson the owner drives a 1973 MFI 911 and he is also an old school Bonnevile/dry lakes LSR guy who still runs a couple cars into his 70s he is a fixture in the LSR world and makes great exhaust systems for Porsche under the Bursch brand. He also makes performance exhausts for DeTomaso and other exotics.

I got to know Doug through a mutual friend and he is great guy and a class act. We even bartered some of the books and DVDs I produce for a new muffler sometime, but mine just sounds so sweet and is so nicely broken in that I just keep running the old system!!!

There is no sweeter sound on earth than a Bursch!

I've always liked the sound of a Bursch on a 911. Of course, any 911 sounds great, but I'm partial to the Bursch sound.

M&K has a very good reputation around here, so have a look at them too. Listen to some sound clips of different exhausts (or listen to them in person if you can), and let that help you decide.

if you are talking about the bursch sport twin pipe with the 2 pipes coming straight out, they sound INCREDIBLE.
if the M&K is the twin pipe coming out the sides, it sounds like a truck. just my opinion with the muffler cut off.

I wish you were closer, I have an original muffler that a PO cut into to convert it but I don't think they did it right. would make a good deal on it.

Bursch = Dynomax 17676 + some 2 1/2" muffler pipe. Sounds fine to me.

how would that compare to a stock banana modified to twin-pipe sport?

This is a bit off topic, but I got my first Bursch muffler from Doug for a 914 I bought in 1979 (his kids were both school friends of mine as the family lived down the street). He had the frame from his top fuel dragster hanging on the wall of his shop, and was usually in process of hot rodding something new whenever I stopped by his shop. I've lost touch with his family, so it's great to hear he's still at it! His mufflers are a great value, I loved the sound on my 914. I'm still running stock on my current 911 however, although that may change when I can find a deal on some SSIs. If I do, I'll try a Bursch before anything else. I do think "sound" is entirely subjective though.

Sounds like a truck? Really? I don't think we would have sold thousands of 911 mufflers if they sounded like a truck. Bursch is an entry level standard steel car muffler, M&K is 321 stainless with scavenge design (think motorcycle and light aircraft) and multiple configurations to match the application. Twice the price and 5 times the longevity.

My Bursch has been in use for over 15 years.

I have the Bursch system on my SC and I really like it... great bang for buck and was directed to this exhaust from a respected engine builder as well. I like the sound--not too loud. Liked it better than B&B, and wayyy better than any Fabspeed exhaust I've ever heard. My personal preference though.

I had a Bursch on my car when I got it. That did sound like a truck. I gave it away free to some guy on the forum here who never even thanked me. I considered it junk, and I suspect he did too.
