replacement seatbelt options

I am starting to fit my new seat mounts in my 72. These will be welded to the car and lowered compared to stock for better positioning. In the process I will be replacing the seat belts.

I would like something similar to the early non-retractable belts. I like the way these hold you in place driving. Are there any good suppliers for a decent modern 3 point?

The plan is welded mounts to the tunnel and floor as well as the stock B pillar upper mount. I can mount to the seat base but feel the other mount is more secure.

Do any of the standard harness manufacturers have good 3 point belts?

Seatbeltplanet.com has three point belts available as well as providing repair of seat belts. They won't look the same as the original Repa belts, but should do the trick for you if you don't want retractable belts.

welding seat belts

Thought i would give you a little warning here , unless done correctly welding
seat belt mounts can be not as strong as original bolted mounts, here in New Zealand Australia, they would not pass safety inspection, would require an engineers certificate to pass. It depends where they are mounted and how.-----ask me how i know, i had to do this on a 356 speedster few years back. and to register a classic here we have to fit new belts.

Thanks for the suggestion. There are some options there.

re: welding plates. The mounts will be strong enough. An early car has mounts that are part of the seat slider/tilt mechanism. Mine will be an improvement.

+1 for seatbeltplanet Jamie, they are in OK and have a good product. It is not quite 100% original-looking but damn close and you have tons more options, including custom.

You're playing with fire here. You're going to be replacing an extremely, and highly, engineered system with a home-brew system.

No I am not. I am replacing a 45YO engineered solution with an up to date engineered solution.

Please don't make comments when you don't know the details.

Relocation of pickup points to better suit belt placement improves safety.
Replacement of old webbing material improves safety.

Shall I go on?

Just bought two sets from seatbeltplanet and very pleased with quality and service. Used factory mounts for mine.

As for re-engineering the mounts, all I can say is someone has to win the Darwin Award.

New webbings will improve safety. I'm interested to hear how new pickup points will.

I got some from Seatbelt Planet and they are great to work with.

Jamie, would a CG-Lock be of interest, or do you want the shoulder belt to be tight all the time, too? John in CT.

For those of you that have used Seatbelt Planet....
It seems that their universal belt that matches my 1988 911 costs 160.00 per pair
the model that they specify for the car is 280.00 per pair.

which did you get? what is the difference? they look the same online
3 point retractible.

thanks

I read somewhere that the Porsche belts are of a different construction, though I can't remember the source, and there was nothing specific. It could just be marketing, or even changing some useless bits so they can say the Porsche belts are different and cost more. I dunno.

I have used a set of the universals and they look good and work well. I plan to buy a set for my 911 when the time comes.

I would send them an email (and provide us with the answer)! They're good people and responsive.

I was plowing around my seats and belts area and discovered that a PO had replaced the original Porsche belts with a set made by Honda!!! The look fine, are in good condition and seem to keep me in place.

Here is my email and their reply - I need front and back for two cars so 400.00 is a big difference if either would work fine...what do y'all think?

Hello,
Thanks for your request. All of our Porsche seat beat belts are custom designed also close as possible with the correct vehicle sensitive retractors, orientation and lengths. You can purchase our standard seat belts but they will not fit. I have in today’s mail webbing color samples as requested.
Thanks,
Steve

Hi
Why is the set
PORSCHE 911 & 911 TARGA 1969-73 FRONT SEAT BELT KIT
3 Pt Retractable Seat Belts for Driver and Passenger Seats

$279.95

When the 3 point retractible end release model is 160.00 per set??

Is the porsche set OEM? Are there differences that I am not appreciating? Thank you in advance.
