Shift Rod replacement

Has anyone ever replaced the entire shift rod?

I have to go throug hthe entire linkage to find the problem and am wondering about removing what is in there to rebuild. Inspect every part and replace what is needed. I understand the getting into the tunnel is a pain, any stories to help, or things to look for?

engine and trans out. front cup removed from the rod, and pull it out the rear. no reason to, as the front support bushing and rear coupler can be changed in the car.

The only reason I would contemplate yanking the shift rod would be to shorten it and position the shift housing closer to me (the driver). Anyone done this?

Otherwise, as Mr. Walker suggests, leave it in there and replace the worn parts from each end.

I ran into the only reason to take the whole thing out, if you switch from 901 to 915 and have to change shift towers also. Like JW said everything rebuildable is accessable from the interior.

Okay, here's an update.

Adjusted the linkage, but now I think I made things worse as I keep nicking R as I pull out of 5th. Replaced the ballcup bushing, but that was not the issue. The tunnel is dented so I am working on that issue now.

I've read numerous threads on adjusting the linage and people who rave about the results. Any suggestions on fixing this downshifting thing?

I switched from 901 to 915. I didn't replace the shift rod tube; just the shifter housing itself.

Nicking reverse: did you get the carrier plate, carrier springs, buffer plate and shift guide correctly reassembled? Is anything excessive worn or bent? See Pelican parts listing for diagrams. Also check the rear shift coupler for looseness and failing bushings.

Actually, I didn't even have to open it up. I'm thinking about replacing all internal parts now anyway. Perhaps instead of the weltmeister shortshift I will either put back the original or purchase the Porsche Short Shift which comes with all new internal componants to the shifter housing.
