Why did my 82 911 have a km speedo in US

Can anyone help me understand why records for my 82 911 sc show it originally had a Speedo in kilometers. It was purchased in 83 from Brumos after spending one year as a program car. There is no indication that it was a euro car.

Don't you guys remember when Jimma Carter decided we were all going to be metric? Lots of 'merican cars had Km speedos too. Of course, they were all changed out immediately, but nothing like the big-ole government telling you that they know what's best for you.

Engine number to the right of the fan way down in there on a flat on the casting.

Yep. Easy to verify. Just open the deck lid. Gearbox requires jacking it up and they often are rubbed off already.

And don't forget the famous 85mph NHTSA approved speedo too...Jimma says "slow down fools" Reagan says "fools make the regulations"

Then it probably had to be retrofitted to meet the speedo law mentioned above.

Thought speedos have date stamps inked on them. That might tell part of the story.
