Bone Head Mistake!

I started my car on thanksgiving '02 and forgot I had a rag in the exhaust pipe. (Keeping mice out) It took a couple of seconds to crank over, started stumbling badly for 4-5 seconds, bang, the rag shoots out and then car begins to idle fine. Let run for a few minutes all seemed good.

Today I notice a little puddle of oil ( about 6" Dia.) Seems to have come from above oil drain plug. have never had any leaks whatsoever beneath my car for the past three winters. Only thing different this year is Mobile 1 15-50W instead of Castrol 20-50W.

Did I mess something up or is it the synthetic oil or both?

Car is 85 3.2 Carrera

Thanks,
Joe

Maybe the oil, 'cause IMHO, the rag had nothing to do with it. If you changed the oil, could the problem be with when you r&r'd the drain plug?

I have heard that the synthetic oil will leak easier. When i bought my 78', it was loaded with Mobil 1 at 120K miles, and it leaked. I use castrol 20w50 with no leaks now at 140K

probably oil return tube seals. usually happens after sitting for a while, when the oil in the tank drains into the case. as soon as the oil level in the case gets above the old, loose tube seals, the puddle happens.

I guess I was thinking that the back pressure from the exhaust pipe being blocked caused something (a gasket) to blow. I know its probably a dumb question but I thought I would ask anyways. Thanks for your responses.

Also, rag (or banana, etc.), in tailpipe is probably not neccesary. At least I've never heard of gerbils climbing in thru the back door like that, oh hell, forget it.

Man didn't any of you guys ever stick a potato in the exhaust pipe of the neighbor's car? We use to do it all the time when I was growing up in Chicago. Love to hear the big bang and watch the potato go flying. Never seem to hurt the cars, but really scared the shiit out of the driver!

Agreed, I had assumed my car was running Mobil 1 and added 3-4 quarts of oil over a few months span (daily driver) and the oil leaks started. Another 'bonus' was an increase in oil consumption from 1qt/800 miles to 1qt/400 miles.

I've since switched back to dino 20/50 and my car still drips oil (oil return tubes) but the consumption went back up to 1qt/800 miles and the perpetual oil cloud that followed me around has diminished greatly.
