Big Bore throtte bodies on a SC?
What can you tell me about this mod? Is it worth the $600 or so it will cost with parts (300) and labor in peformance improvement?

If your SC is otherwise stock, save your money. That engine is limited by the exhaust. Your money would be better spent on a set of SSI or early heat exchangers.

I have SSIs and a stainless sport exhaust. Now what
![]() Since I have your attention Chuck I am thinking the Elephant Racing, Finned Oil Lines instead of adding a front oil cooler beyound my basic trombone system for the moment. Going to change bumpers later on and am thinking the lines will lower the track temps a little and would be a good intermediate step before the major rebuild an bumpers. Good idea or not? Will it bring the oil temps down enough to do it now or should I wait on the cooler? Last edited by rdane; 01-19-2003 at 06:17 PM.. |

$600??. Try $200 and very little labor. Is it worth it? As a stand alone modification, no. If included with high flow intakes (MAF) then yes.

If you have a '79 (with the larger intake ports) with SSI's or early style exhaust, I'd suggest the thing that is limiting your HP at that point are the cams. Go for some 964 cams. A larger throttle body may help at that point, but I'm not conviced. I suspect the next step after replacing the cams is to pitch the CIS (and associated pistons) and go for carbs.

I talked to Performance Products about this mod and they claim improved throttle response.
Someone with a flow bench needs to measure flow through the sensor body and then the stock throttle body to find out if increasing throttle body diameter would be worthwhile. If the throttle body flows less than the sensor body it might be worth doing. The danger is, however, that the fuel distributor calibration could get messed up.

Go straight to the source for your throttle body enlargement, as opposed to the middleman. I have spoken with the gentleman who does the work for many of these performance shops and lists his service in Panorama. It is much cheaper to send out your throttle body for the mod's, than to buy a new one. No data to support it as a useful upgrade that I am aware of. If it makes you feel faster go for it, otherwise I would save my money for the proven performance goodies.
