Help needed removing shift rod bushing

Howdy Pelicans,

I'm a bit stuck. I replaced my shifter bushing and the two coupler bushings but this one has me stumped. I can seem to get the shift rod bushing passed this "bulge" (end of screwdriver). I tried tapping the end of the rod with a hammer (coupler is still out) and pulling from the transaxle end without success.

Is there a trick to it? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Alex

Normally not a bulge there. Probably a plug weld repair that needs to be ground down.

Alright, that's what I thought. Here's a better picture.

So my next question is, how do I check if the rod bushing needs replacing? It was a "while I'm in there project" but now I don't want to tackle it if I don't need to. I'll keep it for next winter's project if it can wait.

Thanks,

Alex

I replaced mine because it was brittle and crumbling apart. Most likely due to age.

Do it now, or do it later, but it's got to be done at some point. It's really not that big a job, however grinding down that weld might be a PITA.

Its hard to tell from the pic but your current bushing doesn't look too bad. I've seen some real gnarled ones before.

I'll wait till my next (first to me) engine out service to replace the rod and bushing.

Thanks all!

If you need a shift rod let me know. I have one that I have been saving but I'm not sure exactly why I'm saving it. I'd just grind the welds on the one you have down and move on.

Thanks, I may take you up on it.

I do and I've thought about it. I'm just terrified that I'll screw up the weld and have to drop my motor to change the rod.
