Paint car with bumpers on or off?

Hi folks-is it a best practice to have the front and rear bumpers mounted on the car or spray everything with the bumpers off and then fit them after? Obviously you have everything done at the same time so the paint matches, but I'm just not sure if it's better to do the final assembly after everything is painted.

Any words of wisdom to pass along?

Generally you want to dis-assemble the car as much as possible and then re-assemble with care.

Fenders, doors, bumpers, hoods, threshold strips , etc all off and all glass out. For some jobs this may not be practical, but that's the target for a good job.

It depends on the paint color.

If your car is metallic it is wise to loosely hang them in place so the metallic color coat looks factory correct. If you paint metallic colors all disassembled they will look odd (bright reflections)when assembled as your hand will be at the wrong angles than it otherwise would have been so reflected light on the metallic flake will be off, You can get it close if you orient all the panels as they will be on the car though. If your car is not a metallic paint color, angle or orientation of the gun while painting doesn't matter (as much) so paint them off the car. Even notice factory paints cars loosely assembled ? Capisce?

Thank you for all of the information and details. My car is light ivory so painting disassembled is apparently the ticket .
