Summer Tire Recommendation

Working on picking up new wheels, 16x8 & 16x9 for '84 911 Cab narrow body.
Performance Summer use. I currently have Kumho MX in 205/55-16 & 225/50-16 on there, with 16x6 / 16x8 wheels. The MX is not available in 245/45-16.

Kumho DOES have a new performance tire (the XS), in 265/45-16 however.

A) Will this tire have a shot at fitting out back;
B) Will the 225/50-16 fit up front on the 8" wheel (if so, the XS has that size as well)
C) Other size suggestions / limits I should be looking at?
D) Camber issues / requirements I should know about?
E) Other brand / model tires I should seriously consider?

Hankook's Ventus R-S2 has them in 225/45-16 & 245/45-16; Sumitomo HTR-Z (have these on my Taurus SHO) in the same sizes. They also both have 225/50-16 & 205/55-16, which I think will be a bit narrow on an 8" wheel, no?

Thanks.

Yes, I drive mine as much as possible. If it's >32° & sunny, I've got the top down.

I am having the Kumho Ecsta XS installed right now. I have 8x16 front and custum 10x16 rear. I have 225/50-16 on the 8's and 265/45-16 on the rears. I don't know how the 8's would fit on your car up front, they fill out my turbo flares with 21mm spacers. I don't think you want to run the 265/45-16 on a 9" wheel; I think it will bulge. They are perfect on my 10's. I bought a set of Fuzion ZRi 225/50-16 and 245/45-16 that I have to ship back to Tire Rack because the rears were going to stretch too much on my 10's.

FS new tires, Cincinnati area

I would say 205's up front and 245's out back. I run 7 & 9's on my 87 Carrera with those tire sizes. You may get 225's up front but it will be tight especially if your car has been lowered. Rolling the fender lips and additional camber will also help with clearance. I do not think you will be able to fit 265's out back.

265/45/16 is barely fitting the rear of my car. My rears have the same offset as a 7x16 and the tires poke about 1/4" out of the wells.

Still looking for info above, but...

Next question... I'm looking at wanting to re-seal the 3-piece wheels before mounting new tires. What are folks using now?

I'll be (finally) matching my fronts (on MY 89), with my rears this weekend......She's got Bridgestone Pole Position Potenzas on the rear and will be shoed with the same on the front this Saturday (205/55ZR16)...hope for better balanced feel, as her present front sneakers aren't in great shape (vibrations, etc.) I'm to make sure that my son-in-law will first check the existing balance, coming off the car,..to confirm my suspicions....then, we'll get to business with the new tasks at hand. (forced-balanced) .

As to the tire selection, I would say that I was quite happy when I loaded the rear Bridgestones (leaving the fronts, as is...they had sufficient tread, yet not a "treadmatch" with the read.....first few weeks scarily slider,..until we got that coating off,..then she gripped fine for the street (even aggressive street driving......I like the tires, for me. Now, these others who "race" (and such),..they've completely different needs,..so weigh your goals against needs.

I'll let you know how the "match" prevails (with the new front sneakers)...the Pole Position Tire.........seems that reviews are acceptable, if anything....

Best of luck (and tastings)....

Doyle

A) The Kumho XS 265/45 wants an 8.5 - 10" wheel, so yes, 9" is appropriate and it will fit fine as long as the wheel o/s is ~ET15
B) 225/50 can fit up front on an 8 but o/s is critical, ET23.3 is on the low end ET25-32 is preferred. The lower the o/s the more trimming will be needed on the lips and more aggressive the camber will need to be.
C) 205/55 or 225/45 are easier fits in front, 245/45 is the more usual rear fit on a 9
D) stock alignments will work fine except perhaps up front

I had the Hankooks on mine 225/45 and 245/45 with no rubbing - good tires - and cheap

Can I see a picture of the 225/45's? I've had too-thin sidewalls before on this car & don't want to make that mistake again.

I'm going with the 245/45's out back, I'm 99% set on. It'd be REALLY nice to have the 265's but I don't want to have that jacked-up 442 look (Had it briefly when I did the t-bars over), and I don't want to lose any/much off-the-line acceleration either.

Have you tried the Hankook Ventus V12 evo2? Those are fantastic tires, esp if you're looking for a summer set up.
