which steel fender shape for a backdate
I have a 1985 that I am backdating. I am attacking the front end now having stripped off the bumper, valance and fenders. I want to order factory new steel fenders. I had hoped to buy the right one without the gas filler door as I would like a filler hidden in the frunk. I also see there is a RS version available. The pictures for these parts are difficult to see details with.
How does the RS wheel well lip differ from the stock 1973 lip? Was there a version of a factory fender without the fuel filler door? Any part numbers you can throw my way? Thanks! Mike so this is how a backdate project starts... |

The 73RS had the same front fender as all the other 69-73 cars and there are no steel fenders that I know of that come without a filler door. I would try to find just the front turn signal sections off some early fenders (or they can be bought new from TRE) and weld those to your existing fenders. The "flare" on the 69-73 fenders is the same as the 74-on fender so if you add the turn signal sections and fill the gas door you'll have what you are looking for. The later fenders are typically in much better condition than the 69-73 fenders. The other option is to buy a new set of early fenders and fill the gas door.

Fronts are, I believe, the same from a 1985 car compared to a '73 RS. Well, except, obviously, for the frond end and signal light buckets. They mostly all came stock with the fender gas fill.
The rear flare is where the difference lies. The lip there is very similar to your Carrera except that instead of being a more or less consistent width lip all the way around the fender opening, it tapers from being narrower at the front and rear to rather wide in the centre top. RS rear lip compared to a stock SC or 3.2 Carrera lip: ![]()

Thanks for the replies!
Further research see the following part numbers for 1969-1973 standard model fenders: 901-503-031-23-GRV 901-503-032-23-GRV Then I find these part numbers for 1972-1973 Carrera RS fenders: 901-503-031-26-GRV 901-503-032-24-GRV Part numbers came from the AASE website. I am still trying to find out what is different about these fenders (besides the huge price difference) so that I can make a purchase. Maybe thinner metal being used to make it lighter? Mike |
