Replacement Rear Speakers

Since I have the back panel out of my '82 SC I'm thinking I should replace the 35 year old speakers as a pre-emptive strike; that time can't be good for speaker cones.

Anyone know what a good direct replacement is? I'm not looking for premium sound (the car provides that) just a decent speaker. Doing a search of our host turned up nothing.

Speakers.

Rear parcel shelf fidelity is a bit difficult due to the lack of space
behind the speakers.

I replaced ours with the 3 way Pyramid 468GS.

The grids are close to the factory originals.

Good luck,

Gerry

I replaced mine a few years ago with Pioneer TS-A4674R. When I took the old ones out the rubber between the paper diaphragm and the case was partially dry rotted and gone. Sounds a whole lot better now!

Good luck,

I'm very pleased with the RetroSound R-463N 4" x 6" Replacement Speakers. Grills are a close match to stock and they fit perfectly (shallow depth).

I am happy with these- amazing how cheap speakers are now compared to the grill price-

Mm. The speakers in the rear shelf don't do much more than confuse the sound stage. I would simply unplug them. There's no money you could put there that wouldn't be better served in a different audio component (such as a modest amp or underseat sub).

Yes, I think Blaupunkt. One thing that is "odd" (probably not though) is that this car has no speaker grilles, per se. Just holes in the rear shelf and the speakers are mounted on studs that are part of the shelf. I had noticed this before, and when I was at the Werks Reunion in Amelia Island I looked at a lot of 911's and SC's in particular. All of the ones I saw had external grilles like the ones pictured in this thread; not one had speakers mounted like mine. A couple of images follow; comments?

Shelf from the topside

Shelf from the inside

That foam strip at the top (in the image; back in the car) is about 2X2 inches, so speaker depth is limited.

I replaced my front speakers with a set of Infinity Reference 6.5" Component speakers and maxed out the RMS wattage to them with an amp. I know this isn't the answer you're looking for, but the sound from the front of the car is so good now I don't need rear speakers.

I ended up disconnecting the rears completely and need to get back there to remove them.

If you have a grill-less rear parcel shelf you may be upset if you put grills in. The reflection from the grills on the back windshield glass is annoying sometimes.

That is how the rear shelf looks on my 79 930. Maybe they ran out of the SC style and used a Turbo one. Or maybe there was a Leather upgrade Porsche uses this style with?

I also used Infinity Reference 4X6 speakers. If you have the rear shelf like the post I quoted. They did not fit the stock tabs perfectly. I had to use a large washer on two of the studs. If you wait for the new model switch on Crutchfield you can get them for 50-60% off. I think I paid $39.95 for the 4X6 rears. Better speakers are worth it. You don't need to go crazy to get decent sound.

Missed Approach, have you had any issues with the R-463N speakers? The reason I ask is that I have them in hand (Crutchfield) and I noticed right off that they are 4 ohm impedance vs. the 8 ohms of the Blaupunkt speakers they are replacing.

Anyone, is this an issue? I know the end result may be just more volume, but I don't want to risk damaging the OEM radio (Blaupunkt Bamberg QTS). I think in some cases that could be an issue. Anyone chime in here, my own knowledge of electronics is limited.

Hi Steam Driver- unfortunately, I'm no longer running the Monterrey (I pulled it and replaced with a Blaupunkt CM148 Arizona and a Kenwood amp up front) I have Pioneer 6.5" TSG1645R 2-Ways for the front door speakers as well. The rears do sound nice, but not sure how they would pair with the existing Bamberg. This is a question for some of our more audio knowledgeable members- can anyone add insight on 4 ohm vs. 8 omhs? Sorry I can't be of more help!

What head unit is in the car? If it was designed for 4ohm speakers (most are), then it'll be fine with 4ohm or higher speakers.

Not a great pic, but these are Kicker speakers. Not expensive, but good response. Miles ahead of 1989 speakers. The grills are stock Porsche, they are secured with Velcro, as they do not snap on like with the originals

My speakers have no visible grille, just holes in the shelf, so grille appearance isn't an issue. (See my pics a few posts back.)

More important, I think is the impedance issue. The original Blaupunkt speakers were 8 ohm, the prospective replacements - on hand) are 4. The Bamberg owners manual does not give a spec for speaker impedance, nor have I been able to find it on- line. I'm guessing that since the stock speakers were 8 ohms, that's what it was designed for. My question is will the radio itself be damaged by the lower impedance speakers?

Most speakers these days seem to be 4 ohm.

It's a bit of a gamble. It could be fine with it, just running a bit hotter. It could also run so hot that something fries.

Without specs, it's hard to be sure.

Remove them and take them to a local Best Buy?

Also,
Which 4x6 rear speaker will fit OEM grille without mods?

The problem isn't so much which will physically fit; there are lot of"work arounds" for that. The issue is finding an 8 ohm impedance. I'd say 95% of what's out there now are 4 ohm.

Not 100% sure if they have that size, but I would highly recommend MB Quart. Incredible sound and the prices have come down significantly.

The 8 ohm speakers are connected in parallel, giving an effective 4Ω resistance.

The perforated leather is just like my 80SC Targa with special leather. The external speaker grills may have debuted with the 3.2, but I'm not sure

The depth is really the problem in this location. Note that the voice coils for the original Blaupunkt speakers are mounted ABOVE the speaker cone to minimize depth. I installed Alpine SPS-410 4 from Crutchfield using the mounting plates that came with. They fit and sound decent enough for me.
