what kind of boobie trap is this?

Putting my motor back together and i discover that these bolts (camshaft retainer, or "end cover" as Porsche calls it) will contact the inner sprocket teeth if the flats aren't turned just so. I'll be the fist to admit i don't have the slightest idea what i'm doing, so maybe there's another explanation to this. But these are the bolts that came out of this location, the sprocket cannot be reversed, and the only cure for this would be to MAYBE slide the chain cover down some to center the opening a bit better ???

Certainly i'm not the first to run into this ? Even once the flat is turned to allow the teeth to clear, there is VERY little room. Would it not be a good idea to run a socket head bolt here ?

Is the cam cover on backwards? Doesn't look right! But some may look different than what I am used to.

Behind that sprocket you need to have a thrust washer, it goes in first. Then following that thrust washer are spacer/shims and you may need more than one of the shims then the sprocket. I suspect you are missing some of those components? The Bentley manual has a good picture of all the components.

See here, part 34 and 35

AHHHH !! I think you're right. I have all the spacers and the thrust washer. Stacked up under the goddammed bolt. LOL I was wondering what good they did there,... but wasn't to that point to feel concerned about them. Man, thanks for setting me straight on this. I knew that couldn't be right,...

Thank you sir. Have a cold one from your fridge on me tonite.

Be sure the same amount of washers go on the same cam they came off of if you're not going to use the measuring tool to align the sprockets. The bevel on the thick spacer goes inward, with the shims on top.
