Please Tell Me What I Have Here

Greetings all,
I recently picked up an oil cooler kit at a local swap meet. It was a spontaneous buy, and given the circumstances, I didn't have time to research it.
The included bits seemed to make up a complete kit and the guy said it would fit my car. I try not to believe everything someone tells me, but it all seemed legit.
In any case, the parts are all brand new and it seemed like a good deal.

Now that I have it, I can't find anything that might tell me what I bought, or even more to the point, how to install it.

The car is a 1979 911SC Targa which currently has the stock trombone cooler.

The question I have is: how would I go about installing this cooler?

After searching here (twice) I can't find an installation thread with a cooler that looks like this one. I did go to the Elephant Racing site, and have to admit that mine looks a lot like theirs. That said, I didn't find their installation sheet to be too helpful. I suppose, like somethings, it may make more since once "you are in there".
While on the Elephant site, I see their cooler has a stone guard which appears to be required as part of the installation.
So, question 2 is, do I need to source a stone guard? If so, any direction on sourcing one would be appreciated.

As always, thank all of you for your assistance.

Keith

here's a tech article from PP - I hope this helps.

You need this part from our host. (Edit - link won't take you to the part, but it is shown on that page.)

Part #: 930-207-319-14-OEM

1985 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe - Oil Circulation - Page 7

There is also a foam seal that is placed around the cooler within the fender. Rather than spend $$ on the part - some have used an inexpensive alternative foam roll from your local home repair supply store - either orange or blue aprons.

Dan - Thank you! I had seen that article and the lack of photos didn't make it too helpful. I read through it and also wasn't too thrilled with the, "take the car to your welding shop to have the lower L-bracket welded to the side of the car" part since it assumes that shop is close enough to drive with the cooler loosely attached.
From your reply, can I assume this is not a simple plug and play installation?

Mark,
I clicked on the link, found page 7, but don't know which part you are referring me to. Can you give me name, description or part number.

Thank you,
Keith

Keith - here is a direct link to the part that Mark listed for you: Protective Stone Guard for Late 93020731914 - Genuine Porsche - 930-207-319-14 | Pelican Parts.

If you tackle this job and want to include images and additional info that we can put into our tech article that Dan posted we would love to use your content! Let me know if you decide you'd like to do this.

You will also need the horn relocation bracket to move the horns forward enough to get the oil cooler in the right position. It does otherwise look like you have most of the kit. Maybe look into the fan kit from Elephant as a nice addition.

Horn Bracket Part no: 911-504-080-00-GRV-OEM

I did this project back in October, I am happy to help if you have questions.

You can do this with a riv nut as well, welding it not required.

Sorry Keith - I didn't intend to mislead you - I had seen that article when I was looking for info on the internal cooler - and I just put it together with your posting. I can't comment on the ease of this task or conversion from the older trombone. But I am sure it'd be doable with more advice from here. (like the riv nut Ayles mentioned).

Good luck

I did a write up on the install I did, which included a temperature-controlled fan. Good luck, it was a good project and a bit challenging by doable. Definitive Elephant Racing Oil Cooler Install Guide (for noobs, anyway)

Thank you all for your replies and for the help they provided. It is sincerely appreciated.

Dan - Please don't think you mislead me! The link you sent was good, I just need a little more guidance and didn't find it especially helpful for my scenario.

Ayles - I would like to take you up on your offer and will reach out to you separately. With the horn location bracket costing $145, I will most likely look for alternative option like the setup "garment" used on his car.

Again, thanks to all.

~Keith

Sounds good! I actually referenced Garments thread quite a bit. The pelican how to was was also quite helpful. In my opinion doing this job really took my confidence in wrenching to another level.

In regards to the bracket, I tried and tried to do without, but could not get everything far enough forward to install the lower bracket. An interesting note on the cost of that part. On October 3 it was $98... I found I couldn't do without it and that was even with installing the smaller Hella horns.
