Need suggestions for track wheel and tire sizes.
I've got a mostly stock '86 930. I am at the stage where I want to get a dedicated set of track wheels and tires. My suspension and bodywork are stock and I have no plans on lowering.
Current wheels and tires: Front: Fuchs 16 x 7 with 205/55-16 Rear: Fuchs 16 x 9 with 245/45-16 My goal is better ultimate grip in the corners, and under acceleration. I don't "need" to go larger than 16", but I do understand that a jump to 17" affords more options with tires. I would like to go a bit wider with the track tires, and I want to maintain the stagger. How large of a rear tire will fit under the stock flares without rubbing? (Pic of my car at Buttonwillow on Friday) ![]()

I'm in exact same boat & have just gotten a set of 17" x 8"/10". From what I can tell, you can fit 8 1/2 and 10 1/2 without any issue; particularly the rear.
Tire size-wise, a common combo is 235/45 front and 275/40 rear. Rear definitely does not have an issue, but front might be tight. Don't forget that each car can be slightly different in terms of clearance. And, there's a good chance that you'll have to remove the windshield washer fluid bottle under the left front fender to clear the tires.

One more comment... you really should consider at least lowering it to Euro ride height. And consider running more "aggressive" alignment. Otherwise, you won't really be realizing the full benefits...
Just my 2 cents...

993 wheels are cheap...you can get cosmetically challenged ones, powder coat them and you are on your way. I picked up a set for 400 bucks.
You DO have to use 1 inch and 2 inch spacers with longer studs though. You can tehn take the spacers off and use the Fuchs, but have to use open headed nuts.....

I have a connection at BBS, so most likely I will be getting their wheels. I need specifics for wheel sizes and tire sizes. Thanks!

16s if you want to be close to compatible....17s have better tires choices......
7.5 up front, 9.5 to 10s in the rear. Anything bigger than 225/45 will rub in front, 245/45s in the rear.

If BBS can custom build the rims, you may even get rid of the factory spacer in the rear with the right offset... save another lb

My RS bodied 911 does not have front flares and I can fit a 17x8 rim with either a 245/40/17 Hoosier or a 255/40/17 Victor racer with no rubbing.
The RS flare rear accomadates a 17x10 with a 275/40/17 of the above brands as well. I would expect a turbo flare car could accept the same or more? ![]() ![]() |

So, it sounds like a good combo would be:
Front 17x8 with 235/45-17 Rear 17x10 with 275/35-17 What is the correct offset/bolt pattern? I am planning on getting a set of BBS RK's...

I agree with Ted. I have a Euro 930 with 7.5 and 9inch 17inch wheels, running 245/40/17, and 275/45/17.
No rubbing. And I drive the crap out of it. Brian

I agree that 8 & 10 are good widths for wheels and that BBS makes some great wheels. I have the RKs on one of my cars, but they are not available in the o/s or bolt pattern that you will need. The best currently available BBS wheel for your app is the LM(only available in 7.5 & 9). You will want ~23-25mm o/s front and 15-19mm o/s rear. For wider wheels w/ the correct o/s I would look at Kinesis or Fikse.
For track use you may want to consider 18s as the available profiles and widths are better. For street use they may be problematic if the roads in your area are poor. Since you want dedicated track wheels the 18 is definitely the way to go. If you want to maximise wheels, the 930 flares will accomodate 9 & 11" wheels but you will need to fiddle w/ lips and windshield water bottle etc. For dedicated track wheels 8 & 10 w/ 225/40 & 285/30 Michelin Sport Cups would be a really nice setup. Hoosiers in 245/35 & 285/30 would also be great if no street use is planned.

My connection is at a wheel/tire shop, so I can get most wheels at a discount. I was really hoping to get the BBS RK's. Now, that they may be out of the question, what other wheels have the correct offset, and are the correct size (and are light)? I'd prefer a single-piece wheel.

I have eagle F1's on my '86 w\ factory wheels. I think they are slightly oversized - I posted the sizes around the first of the year here, I don't recall them off the top of my head, but they are great!

I thought you could run 275s/335s F/R on 9s/11s under turbo flares? Heck, I've got 245s/275s under SC flares....

Actually, I thought this was pretty common. I've been running this combo for about 6 years now. I figured it was "old school"....
They fit just fine. No rubbing except my fronts will rub against the inner fender at full lock, but then again the stock 185/70-15s did the same thing. Mike

Mike,
I'm in the process of purchasing some fikses for an 84 911 and see a lot of cars with your tire combination. What rim width and offset combination are you using and what did you have to do to the car to get them to fit? Thanks Tim |
