Questions about engine mount crossbar
Hello all,
At some point during the last year i had purchased a rsr style engine mount crossbar. I didn't pay too much attention to the old one before I tossed it. This week i went to put my motor back in the car and had a hell of a time getting the 12mm bolts in the new crossbar. The new bar didn't have threads in the bolt holes like the old one but they were smaller ID than the bolts needed to go thru them. So i drilled them out a little bit and that solved the problem. I still had to pry the mount bar a bit to get things lined up but in the end I used a couple of hex nuts and flat washers on the bottom to secure the two bolts. My question is, should I have one of the large washers on the bottom somewhere like is on top of the engine mount or is it ok to have it (top to bottom): bolt, large washer, mount, crossbar, smaller flat washer, nut in that order? To be honest, i'm shocked that the mount bar goes under everything else. If the fasteners fail, the motor just falls out the underside of the car. To me it would make better sense to have the crossbar on top of the mount plates that are welded to the chassis. But who am I to second guess 50 years of motor mount logic here.

Yep, just a regular washer between mount and nut. Just enough to seperate the two. It would take a lot for that huge bolt to fail, and you do have 2. All mounted low to keep everything low in the car. The large washer on top is really part of the resiliant motor mount system so its doing something very different than the lower. Isn't there another large washer below the mount maybe as I remember ?? Also remember the motor removes to the bottom, makes it easy connecting from the bottom.

Good question. I don't think mine has this 2nd large washer (first time i've had the motor out but certainly not the first time for the car so maybe PO left them out by mistake).

Go look on the PET. Shows from the top: Long bolt to smaller washer to big washer (called the seat) to the mount (called bearing) to another big washer (seat) to the engine mount bar. Aftermarket bars like mine have a nut on the bottom either welded on or maybe loose. Welded is much more convenient and then there is no washer with the nut. I correct my earlier comment. The nuts on my mount bar are welded on, no lower washer. (been too many years) You do all the tightening from the top so washer would do nothing anyway.
