Ball Joint Socket???
I'm doing a full front suspension rebuild on my '84 Targa. New ball joints will require a special socket to properly install and I don't have one but would like to "rent" one if you have the tool. I'll pay postage both ways and some amount of rental, I just can't see buying this tool and never using it again!
I am located in the SW suburbs of Cleveland (Strongsville), Ohio Thanks in advance for your help.

I think the sockets used for 4 wheel drive front hubs also fit the 911 ball joint. You may be able to check a local auto parts store to see. I have read this several places here over the years, but have yet to change out mine so cannot vouch.

I used a pipe wrench and treated the nuts as expendable. just a thought.

I tried messing around with modifying a tool I had. Didn't work and eventually just bought the proper one. I'd lend you mine but from NW BC the freight won't be worth it.

Talking about the castle nut? A pipe wrench with a cheater works great!

+1 pipe wrench 5 ft pipe.
also, While C/A's are off, drop BJs off with mech and some cash, let him torque new hardware up to the 184 ft-lbs you need.

Do NOT use the socket to remove the nut. It will booger it up and make it not usable. Like others said, pipe wrench and cheater to remove plus a little dremel cutting. The trick to putting on a new ball joint nut is to put a floor jack with a piece of wood under your socket/ratchet wrench. Put as much upward pressure as you can. Use a cheater pipe with your ratchet. You'll probably never over torque it.

I remember using a bit of heat, a large hammer and the multi purpose tool being part of a VW Super Beetle front strut to remove and install those nuts.

Mine weren't rusty so came right off using a little PB Blaster and the jack/wood/breaker bar method. If still on the car its easy. Wasn't re-using but simpler than grinding or hammering.

Great! Does anyone know which of these sockets is the one to fit Porsche 911s pre-1990? I couldn't tell by the listing: https://www.summitracing.com/search/part-type/ball-joint-service-tools/section/hand-other-tools?N=4294950890%2B4294951499&SortBy=default&SortOrder=ascending&tw=ball%20joint%20&sw=ball%20joint%20service%20tools&cm_mmc=ppc-google-_-search-_-general-terms-_-k

For my 87, needed to look like the one our host sells. With the 4 small lugs. Not a socket with 6 faces. You can see if you look at the nut side of the ball joint.
