HAHAHA! The new Toyo R888r 205/55 is...

efing huge!! Looks like a damn ballon...
Tire Rack said I was the first person outside Cali to purchase the new 205/55-16, the second person overall from Tire Rack. Kinda wish I would have waited until I'd seen them on another car.

The 245/45s are the exact same size, same specs as the Michelin Sport Cups I took off, but the 205/55s are larger than any other 205/55 I've ever owned, Michelin, Bridgestone, Dunlop.....Tire Rack doesn't even have the spec of this size listed, and the Toyo website spec sheet is empty. I guess I mistakenly trusted the size listing.

Guess I'm gonna get a pair of the 205/50s and see how those are.

To me, it looks fine.
I guess it is all in what you are used to.
FWIW, this is the size I run on mine and I like the look. Running Continental DWS.
I don't really like the look of super low profile.

I dunno - that tire does look awfully tall. It's not a 205/65, is it?

Toyo R888 and R888R's are 10mm wider than what they spec them as, so a 205 is actually a 215

I don't mind the look. I think the fatter side walls are most appropriate for our cars IMHO.

Sometimes manufacturers use one casing size to mold more than one tread width on, or so I have heard. If your tires clear your wheel wells and the car handles well, I wouldn't worry too much.

Then it's not really a 205, right?

It's frustrating when inducstires decide to stray from the original confines of measurement...reminds me of framing lumber, a 2x4 is actually 1.75 x 3.5 and yes, I understand the history regarding that change.

So what are the actual OD & SW & TW measures?
A generic 205/55 x16 would be 24.9", 8.1" & ~7.4" respectively

I have done tire design (in plant, not initial design). Green tire (uncured) diameter and width are critical. No way you mix tire sizes in a mold.

This is correct. That 8.1 is section width which is the widest part of the tire when measured on a specified rim (manufacturers rim spec) width.

Nah, Toyo 888 205 is usually very near to 205mm, other manufacturers are often narrower. For example I had a set of Yokohama 225 that I measured to 210mm, sucks.

I think they look great on the car!

Go to the manufacturer's website and find the specs, then share them with us. If the size is out of line with previous versions, return them to TireRack, then source the correct versions from another Vendor.

The generic rim width is 7" for the example I posted

I've had a similar experience with Dunlop Direzza tires. The ones I bought to replace the same sized Michelins I had on my 911 are far meatier.
