Background.
I replaced my bearings and races a few months ago. When I removed one of the races from the right hub, a sliver of metal come with it and the OD of the race and the ID of the hub had some strange lines. The weren't parallel so I didn't think the race was spinning but I don't know what else would cause markings on the race OD. Ever since I put in the new bearings and races, the right bearings will not stay tight and I have a groan from the right wheel when the car is rolling very slowely. I don't hear any strange noise at speed. Is the groan as symptom of a spinning race? Any ideas? I feel like I should replace the hub but I'd thought I get some other ideas. Also, can't find hubs on PP. Anyone know hub cost?? Thanks,

I had the same groan you describe and I believe it was a dragging brake caliper.
I thought wheel bearings too. When I pulled the hub there was plenty 'o grease. The bearings and races were fine as well. New calipers and fresh wheel bearings and no more groan here.

You could try EASY (510)653-EASY or Parts Heaven(800)767-7250 in the bay area for used hubs if you want to go that route.
If the bearing race is spinning there would be rings of groves cut into the hub which may be a possiblility. Did the race slip into place easily? One of the things to on the next set of bearings/races(replace as set) is to heat the hub (250?) 1/2 hour and freeze the races. Also if your not pressing them in(recommended), grind off the outer surface of the old race, flip it over and use it as a driver. Work quickly and pound hard and evenly!!! to seat them. I left the steel rotor attached to avoid warpage. My bearings loosened a couple of times until I put a careful drop of locktite on the adjust nut. There is probably a better way, but this seemed to work o.k. |

I go with the possibility of Brake binding too - similar problem with mine fixed by rebuild (cheap to do too!)
However, not sure about the other symptoms you describe - the nut coming loose - unless the vibration from the rubbing is loosening it. Try removing your pads and see if there's any 'vibration type' wear (you'll know what I mean if you see it!)

Thanks for the replies.
I was thinking it was a sticking caliper as well but when I spin the right wheel, The brake pads aren't dragging on the rotor. Rebuilding the calipers would be cheaper than a new hub so it might be worth doing first. It's probably time anyway with the mileage on my car. I'm still concerned with the bearings since they will not stay tight. I've repacked them once and have adjusted them a few times. I did heat the hub and freeze the races. I used the old race to tap in the new race. Both races seemed to seat fine.
