Wevo noise
I recently installed a Wevo shifter on my 915 shift tower. I really like the rifle bolt action and precision of the shifter but it also produces some very unpleasant noises that are quite annoying.
First, in 1st and 2nd gear the centering action from the springs pushes the shifter lever toward the center of the tower which transmits transmit lots of noise right through the shift lever and into the cabin. Pulling the lever away from the center eliminates the noise. 5th gear does the same thing, but not as bad. Also, in 3 & 4 the shift lever has some loose play fore and aft which results in some awful rattling. I adjusted the set screw on the forward side of the tower, but there isn't enough travel in the screw to eliminate the fore/aft play. Any suggestions are appreciated. I did do a search before posting this and didn't come up with a solid answer. Nick

The vertical tabs on the carrier plate for 5th and reverse are designed as a stop/rest so the springs in the shift housing don't contact the shift tube dongle against the shift forks in the gearbox. Without those tabs, any gearbox vibrations transmit to the shift housing via that metal-to-metal contact.
Fore and aft slop could be caused by excessive wear in the shift lever bushing, the shift tube support bushing or the bushings in the shift coupler. Check those first. Remove the tunnel top plate and while holding the shift tube stationary, move the lever and observe the above bushing locations where there is excessive play. If you haven't performed any bushing replacement during your ownership, it may be time to replace them. About $25-$30 for all three areas. The threaded pin in the front of the shift housing takes up initial fore/aft play in the box that contains the shift lever. After initial play is taken up, further tightening will increase friction to the left-right movement of the lever. If fore/aft play remains, the issue is in the linkage to the gearbox. My wevo shifter is rattly as well:
Rattly Wevo in 915 It got worse when some parts fell out: Identify these tiny parts...? It is currently apart at a shop and they tell me some bushings are worn. I would start there. |

Thanks boys. My car is a new build so all the bushings are brand new stock items. I will have my mechanic look again, but if I understand you correctly Sherwood, are you saying the Wevo eliminates the tabs needed to keep the pressure off the shift tube? Is there a solution?

When first I added a spring loading system for the 1/2 plane I realized this made 1st and 2d noisy. I just welded tabs on the left side of the horizontal plate, and welded a hook onto the shift lever. Solved that. I had some communication with Hayden about this when I saw that his spring loading system did not take this into account. I didn't realize that this is an issue in 5/Reverse with the WEVO, if indeed it is. He seemed to think this wasn't something important. In a race car you are in so noisy an environment that you aren't apt to notice this, and 3d and 4th are the gears you are in for the most time.
The dongle pressure is radially against the slot in the shift rods, so I don't think it puts any pressure on the brass yokes which engage the groove in the operating sleeve for 1/2, so it is hard to see that this would cause wear on anything. Same with 5th or reverse, as the finger is just pressing harder (or less hard) on the slot in the rod. |
