Post Cup holders - highly technical :)

Do later 911 center consoles fit? If so, do they have a built in cup holder? I like the look of the cup holder Pelican used tohave. Are there similar solutions?

Thanks

Cup holders are a very important feature of a daily driver for a java junkie like myself.

Here's my solution. Total cost about $2

When I read in one of the "enthusiast" mags that all 2002 model Porsches had cup holders, I knew it was all over.

Mine is positioned just to the right of 5th gear. Once I'm on the Interstate at cruise speed, the hand slides to the right and picks up a hot cup of Joe.

If your car is more than just a weekend toy, it's a nice feature.

Maybe I should market my design. I could call it a Cup-Collar, or Cool-Cup or something like that.

Next you're going to want a mini-fridge and a garbage bucket. The only food and drink that goes in is what's still caught in my goatee.

Bill, I like it. It gives the car a whole new level of sophistication. I'm thinking of getting a lump of foam type stuff (computer packing material) and shaping it to fit the front part of the door bucket with a coke can size hole in the middle of it. My old Toyota I did the same but stuck it on top of the dashboad.

Hey, I've just gotten an inspiration! Hook up a heat conductive cup holder to the cool-collar on your oil filter - to keep that cup of java hot. Of course the greatest benefit - the added mass of the cup holder will drop your oil temps - ANOTHER 5 or 10 degrees!!!

The most elegant solution for the cup holder I have seen goes to Jack. I think he said it was a VW part.

Jack, care to elaborate?

Guys, I've tried the door mounted designs, and they don't work. Imagine what happens to a hot full cup of coffee when you slam the door closed. Also, if you have to get rid of the cup to shift, then you've got to do a two hand swap. It's not the way to go.

I've also tried mounting a cup holder to the top of the autoheat controller. That worked OK, but you have to look down to get the cup in the correct position.

I was the designer and builder of the cupholder that was pelicanparts.Thankfuly i sold all that i made ,but lost money on everyone of them. They were just to expensive to make , cnc'd, black anodized parts can get to expensive if you don't have the volume. Thank god for "cool collar" , it saved the day.BTW cupholders need to be in the center of the car where there is less rocking motion from the car.ie less spillage . The design for the cupholder can be purchased if anyone is interested.-Jerry

CUPHOLDERS? WE'RE REALLY WRITING OF CUPHOLDERS???? The "good old days" cupholder was between a girlfriend's legs..as in, "Here, hold this between your legs & keep it hot!" (Or cold..as the case may be.)

I agree that the door mount isn't ideal, with regard to rocking, but I haven't had any spillage problems and the VW unit has a saucer-like underside when it's open and in use, so little spills would get caught.

Considering the lack of 'dead space' in a 911 cockpit (meaning a section of air where your hands or knees aren't liable to move through), the front left area is pretty hard to beat.

I wish I had a better picture, but:

Another solution is to put one in the arm rest, but that's not really in easy reach.

I find the space between the seats works great. Starbucks can be wedged between the E brake and the seat, Big Gulps sit on top of the E brake. The seat belts help to keep them upright when ripping away from rice boys.

What more do you need?

Clark, maybe it's a design fault with the SC but I just can't get my Coke can to stay between the seat and the e-brake. Being a serious Coke head (CocaCola) I need to get my fix while driving and I really was looking for a beter way.

"Big Gulps sit on top of the E brake"

What do you use to wipe up the Big Gulps after braking hard? I think I tried that position too with coffee. I've tried a lot of things including a removable holder that attached to the fresh air vents (it bounced too much, but the position was great).

I wonder if this thread will live as long as the V8 thread. How about a V8 AND a cup-holder in a P-car?

It's from a 1997 Passat (VW part number 3A1 862 531 01C). Costs about $35. Here's are some pictures of one from an Audi owner's web page.

Stop ripping on cup holders. They are nice to have. I decided to put one in the C2 when I was driving home from the fast-food restaurant with a large soda wedged in the only place i could find to hold it. The L/F door pocket by the speaker. Needless to say, I ended up with about 32 ounces of sticky brown residue on the drivers floorboard! AAAAAAH!!!!

So. If for no other reason, they are nice for simply "transporting" drinks home. (And damn it, I need that morning Mocha!)

P.S. In a C2, you can remove the useless cassette holder and replace it with a generic cup-holder. It's in just the right spot.
