Oil cooler bypass with new install in different location

Can anyone here tell me if I can install a new oil cooler on 75' 911S also bypass the old one and leave it attached instead of remove it for future maintenance ?

Do not have a clue what you are trying to ask. Are you wanting to install a new engine mounted oil cooler, but leave the old still attached? if so, then no, that can not be done.

Are you asking if you can add a new fender or front mounted oil cooler, but bypass the engine mounted oil cooler, and still leave it attached? If so, then no again.

If you are wanting to add an aftermarket oil cooler in the front of the car, fender mount etc, and not wanting to have the engine mounted oil cooler, why not take the engine mounted oil cooler off, and instead of trying to bypass it, install a second oil filter utilizing the oil filter console from a 993 3.6L? That way, you will add a second oil filter, and keep things simple...

Also if you go that route of adding the 993 oil filter console, remember you have a raised portion on your air shroud that directs air from the fan towards your engine mounted oil cooler. You will have to modify that someway. ( I just cut mine off, and using a piece of carbon fiber, just filled in the cut out raised portion.

I will take a few pics of my setup in an hour or so, and post them when I get back from lunch

Yes. You have several options.

You will continue to use the engine mounted cooler in either case.

1. install factory lines from an SC with a "trombone" style front fender cooler.
2. install aftermarket kit like I have from one of the vendors such as Elephant Racing.
3. install a mocal kit that is not factory looking but generally cheaper.
4. home made oil kits using various off the shelf components and AN connections/adapters.

Generally you need:
Oil thermostat
Feed line
return line
Front mounted cooler (carrera style or trombone) electric fan for bonus
Flex lines to attach from hard lines to cooler.
crossover line (unless you already have it. Moves the oil line from the back of the engine to the front.
2 new lines from t stat to x over line and t stat to original cooler that's on the back of the engine.

In my build thread Here is a google doc of my cost break out sheet and part numbers.

And here is what I did. I sourced all of my parts from Summitt Racing (which a distribution store is 45 miles from me), and it came to just under $900 for everything I needed.
I do not run an engine mounted oil cooler, and run the 993 oil filter instead. My Link ECU controls the fans. The fans barely come on (only in prolonged stop and go traffic), and in the dead of summer here in the Atlanta area, my oil temps hardly ever get past 215 deg.

Here are a few pictures. Hope this helps.

Thanks Brad, from looking at your set up. is your two coolers run the oil cooling without using the factory oil cooler unit, and your 2 unit fans are placed in blow upward?
As I mentioned on the beginning, I like to use one oil cooler (New Installed) and not using the factory unit attached to the engine but not taking it out from the car

Yes, I have nothing factory in my car (as far as oil cooling goes) except for the stock lines and thermostat. I run one oil cooler in each fender, with NO engine mounted cooler. The fans are in a pusher config, and are controlled by my ECU. There are fan control modules on the market that you can buy to control the on, off, and hystatis functions. I have my on temp set at 215deg, and off set at 205 deg. Here is a picture of the air intake on my front bumper, showing the cooler and fan (pass side). Hope this helps! ;) I am thinking that there is no way to bypass the engine mounted oil cooler, and still leave it on the engine.

a) what do you refert to as "old one"? the engine-mounted?
b) do you already have oil lines running the passenger side to the front right wheel well?

regarding b) its as "75 911s" said

regarding my experience -and in case you do not care too much about period-correctness- then don't go for the trombone (cooling is poor compared to technical effort put in installing it) but go for later versions, at least the 20-rod cooler. much lighter is the Carrera 3.2 one. the fan is not obligatory (unless you ride in a generally hot area).

regarding the engine-mounted pre-cooler, I'd not envisage deleting it. unless you change to some super crazy racing setup. stay stock in this detail.

to suport a future oilcooler you'll need this suport: 91150149001
brackets at top: 91150349201 + 93020792100 (welded in at rear of headlight bulge)

Porsche did it from the factory (deleting the engine mounted oil cooler on the 3.6L). And they added a second oil filter. As long as you add adequate cooling elsewhere, it is a non issue.

As far as brackets go, if you want to pay the extreme prices for a factory Porsche part, then yes, get the part numbers mentioned above. If you are going aftermarket, dont bother with the factory brackets. Instead, fabricate your own. I was forced to make my own brackets, as I put the largest cooler I could fit in there.

Can't recall where I saw it, but I have seen an oil cooler bypass unit to be bolted in place of the cooler or the filter console.
It was just a sort of U-turn device. Don't know if it was factory or after market, but
I have seen one. Perhaps on old SmartRacing part.

Very cool!!! Would be interested to see who made it, or if it is still available.

He needs a fan if he is not using the engine mounted cooler. Absolutely needed in stop and go.
I am running a 3.8l engine (not having a engine mounted fan) with 2 coolers in the front, I would toast the engine without a fan in stop and go.

I agree on that. Since I have a fan on each of my coolers, they catch the rise in temp quickly, and they are not on for very long.

Turbobrat930, he has a 77 S and not a3.6l ;-)

HorstP, only if he does not delete the engine-mounted cooler ;-)

I'm sure i saw it in an old Smart Racing catalog. Jerry Woods Enterprises took over
a lot of their parts when Smart Racing quit offering all their goodies. Might check with Jerry.
