Electric Converted 911

Saw this on Reddit this morning... Found it interesting, though I'd share

Electric 911 - Influx

Well... however fun it is, it is not a 911. A 911 is a gasoline, peaky torque, flat 6 engine, in the rear. A 911 true fan wants anything less, warts et al. Isn't that the equivalent of an air pumped doll?

I think this will be the future as emission and fuel costs continue to rise. I actually find the sound of the electric motor kind of thrilling (brings me back to my old slot car and RC days).

Didn't Ruf already build an electric 911 as well?

Electric cars are not novel. The first cars were electric. They did not succeed due to range and charging issues... same today. Even if an e-storage device would be devised to hold a large charge quickly... where is the grid energy to charge ALL the vehicles in the country/globe?

You say slot cars... I say golf carts.

This is very cool.

It makes me wonder why no one makes a reasonably priced electric car that's not ugly.

This thing is sweet. These electrics sound like space fighters.

It will be interesting to see what happens when OEM battery packs can be picked up for (comparatively) cheap and a de facto standard electric drivetrain emerges that rivals the swappability of an LS.

The packaging concerns of electrics is very compelling, because the connections for most major components is flexible. You could put quite a few batteries between the axles, major power conversion and cooling in the frunk, and only have the motor hanging off the back attached to the transmission.

https://www.electricclassiccars.co.uk/

A Pelicanite built one some years ago:

1983 911SC Conversion to Electric Drive

There seems to have been more concern with getting it to work than optimizing performance, but it's neat all the same.

there is an electric longhood 911 in Austin that I had the privileged to drive a few months back. The batteries fill both the engine compartment and the frunk with the motor down low inline with the geearbox. It was fun with a low center of gravity and 50/50 weight distribution, power was instantaneous although it didn't pin me to the seat like a Tesla. Not at all hating on this but I highly doubt the range figures of 200 miles. The cost of batteries is not there yet, It will be interesting to see if Moore's Law applies to batteries. I like the smell of gas.

I think it's great. For now I'll keep my car ICE powered, but I'd love to replace my motorcycle with an electric model. I'm just waiting until prices get reasonable.

A longhood converted to electric is a sin of the worst kind.

And definitely, Moore's law does not apply to battery development, not by a long shot.

Last fall, John Dunkle (Rennlist founder) stumbled across his old 1987 Carrera, converted to electric, for sale on eBay.

It's for sale in the classified section...

We did a 993 cabriolet conversion about ten years ago. That car is so much fun.

From the RL post: "An "electric conversion"?? This is killing me..." -- Well stated!

Some say the smell of gas... I say that, oil smell, the raspy sound, the peaky torque curve, the rear-weight bias - that is the 11! An electric conversion is distasteful for this iconic car.

A couple of years ago Excellence Mag did a piece on a 914 converted to electric. It was a pretty cool car, the owner still needed to upgrade the brakes to deal with the power. I think it was 2 speed? Anyway, in a 914 I think this would be a hoot. Not sure I would "waste" a 911 for this - but of course, each to his own.

A further comment - I looked at a new E-Golf for the commuter car - here in my part of the world we are getting bent over on electricity prices - I pay $.20 per kWh, so my back of the envelope scribbles says that a gas fill up cost twice as much as a diesel fill up (in terms of miles travelled) and a E fill up was half the cost of diesel. Based on that, when I factored in range anxiety and battery replacement cost, diesel was the clear winner. I drive a lot of highway miles, your mileage may vary. I got a sweet deal on a new 2015 Golf TDI.

Sweet. But 200 mile range is what gets me.

I'm curious, did it mate to the 915 manual transmission? And did you shift gears much while driving? I imagine it would feel weird as the motor torque would start out strong and then fall off, the opposite of an ICE as I understand.

And has anybody else noticed the targeted ads on Pelican here show the Zero (electric) motorcycle today?!?

Add A/C, and I would drive that every day.
