So, Harry; you going to honor the resuls of the poll?
BTW: If I get El Jalapeno repainted, I will probably go back to the original steel deck, so my ducktail could be available for you. Nothing definite yet. |
Here is a clip from R&T testing out the ductail on a 74 Carrera Targa.
The results show that without the spoiler (the test Carrera had been fitted with the Targa's decklid for this com*parison) airflow begins lifting the rear of the car at 30 mph. And by 100 mph, the rear of the car is "lighter" by 200 lbs. But with the Carrera spoiler, weight loss stabi*lizes above 65 mph at only 35 lbs. As a result, the rear tires can develop more cornering force with the spoiler, because they have more vertical load forcing them to the pavement. And you don't have to peg the speedometer before those benefits are delivered. The spoiler begins working to your advantage at 30 mph. |
To those saying no tail on a targa come on there's an exception to every rule. Right? This car would not be nearly as sporty and cool with a standard decklidhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1497376768.JPG

Do you go fast ? Tails are functional. However, if you don't have a chin spoiler on the front, you shouldn't run a tail period.
I have driven cars with tails, and without, and it can be noticeable at speeds over 80, particularly in a strong crosswind. A duck and a chin, if you are planning a hot rod look. |
The look of tail
A little tail never hurt anybody.Just ask the guy from Texass. That is why they call him Rawknees.I even sent him carbon fiber kneepads for Xmas.Fred

One I have been considering for our Targa. A small tail but not as pronounced as a Duck.

+1 for kitty perch :-)
Initially, I thought the duck was a bling thing.
Reading Paul Frere's book, I find: 1) That the factory used the Duck to cut the rear aerodynamic lift in half - no small thing, which made the car corner and brake better. 2) The duck moved the aerodynamic center of pressure rearward, which made the car less susceptible to side winds, more stable. 3) The duck REDUCED the aerodynamic drag by 3%, small, but not an increase!! Then, on this forum, there sere several reports of reduced engine oil temperature, due to the duck's increasing the air pressure at the grill. This was a significant 10 degree drop, changing from a standard lid to a duck lid - also a very good thing. This reduction in oil temp because of greater airflow into the engine compartment is very likely to increase the amount of air the engine is able to intake, thus increasing the power, not a lot, but we are moving in the right direction. And this is the first step up in aerodynamic improvements!!! The successive tails/wings provide even more benefits. The factory balanced the duck with the rubber chin spoiler for a more evenly balanced aerodynamic result. I bought a newperformance duck, but haven't fitted/painted,or installed it yet, (also bought the Pelican chin spoiler). So, lower drag, lower oil temps, more power, less susceptibility to side winds and most importantly, less lift at speed, (even 70 mph). The Porsche is meant to be driven, not admired at the curb, put the pedal down. chris |
Thankfully, I have a mini duck, duck tail, hopefully an early turbo tail and a no-tail engine lid for my 75 widebody..... Different tails for different moods...You could say I have a tail fetish..Tim

Wah wah wah Targas shouldn't have tails wah wah. If Porsche didn't want them to have tails they wouldn't have put them on.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1497403835.jpg

For longhoods definitely a short or reg ducktail.
But mine came with a turbo tail and I have a hard time if ai think about taking it off. I think the silver/black goes very well. So I totallybdisagree with the turbo tail opinions 😬 Here's some for you! <a href="http://s1308.photobucket.com/user/drdynamics/media/911%20SC%20Targa/IMG_1320_zpsoabmhhsl.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1308.photobucket.com/albums/s616/drdynamics/911%20SC%20Targa/IMG_1320_zpsoabmhhsl.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo IMG_1320_zpsoabmhhsl.jpg"></a> <a href="http://s1308.photobucket.com/user/drdynamics/media/911%20SC%20Targa/56C9A5B2-0C5E-4EDD-97A0-81D9F7F188AD_zpssyp2yifw.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1308.photobucket.com/albums/s616/drdynamics/911%20SC%20Targa/56C9A5B2-0C5E-4EDD-97A0-81D9F7F188AD_zpssyp2yifw.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 56C9A5B2-0C5E-4EDD-97A0-81D9F7F188AD_zpssyp2yifw.jpg"></a> |

Tail or No Tail

Like 86 ssinit said on his post, "If Porsche wouldn't wanted Targas to have tails, they would not have installed them". So if we take Porsche out of the equation, it goes to: 1. personal preference 2. benefits for having one for performance improvements and 3. See 1.

Going with a naked butt on my current RSR-ish build. It's a coupe.

There is no correct answer, since everyone can agree that that anyone who disagrees with their opinion is a bozo.
This is not an all or none proposition. Have both and switch off. Life is not black and white, unless you are color blind. |
