buying a 72'

O.k guys you steered me right on the 73't i was considering a while ago. Thanks I decided it wasn't for me. I thought it was the deal of a lifetime type thing. Went for $3000 but who really know what kinda money pit it would have turned out to be for me. Plus I do believe there is always a better deal out there.
Well I've proved that theory once again. I've come accros a 72' thru a friend of a friend. I haven't seen it yet which would normally be a bad thing. The engine is out of it & torn apart. I'm going to buy if I can ever catch the guy at home. Really I'm buying it for the suspension & wheels for my 914. Worst case senerio! Best case I'm looking to restore it. I'm wondering if it turns out to have little rust & worth restoring. Would I be better off just buying a newer 3.2 or 3.6 to put in it? The originall is torn apart anyway. Oh yeah & the tranny is sitting in a box. It was rebuilt but the guy ran outa cash to finish.
So worst case I get the parts I want for my 914. Best case I can post here full time(guess that might not be best case for you guys ). I am curious about the engine question though?
Thanks for all the help guys. Hopefully i can post some pics of it monday!

If that does not work out for you, send me a note. I may be interested.

price the parts you need from a wrecking yard. Then make an offer using that as a factor.

I picked it up today. Actually my buddy Eric & I will be working on it together. His wife said no to him was how I get it! He still wants to help work on it though. Way cool for me!
Well here it goes. It is red & very straight. Floor pans are in excellent shape -zero rust there. Also engine bay & trunk are solid. I found some bubbled paint by the windshield. Also in front of one of the headlights! Look like fairly easy fixes. The interior is out right know along with the motor & tranny. Engine is torn apart but all there (Supposedly). Tranny is still in the box from the tranny shop that rebuilt it! Overall I am thrilled. I'm still deciding if I have the time to do this project though. I'll try to post soem pics tommorow!

what about the battery area, headlight buckets, sills, taillight areas - the know problem areas. It's not clear if the body is worth anything or how much. You need to really be careful and look this car over with care.

For 800 bucks it's hard to get upset (you did get a motor right?), but it looks like a rusty POS. BTDT, 3 years later I'm still not done fixing mine.

There's a fellow in Santa Fe advertising a 72 T in Pano. I had a short conversation with him (no, I'm not in the market). He said he's looking for ~$6500. Sounds like it's in really good shape.

The tailight area is in good shape (some minor surface stuff). The battery box area is in great shape along with the whole front trunk. The head buckets I haven't got to check real well yet. I'm a little worried about the drivers side as that is one of the spots where it has bubbled. This car is definately not perfect. It is in much better shape rust wise than my 914 was when I started restoring it. It is 95% done now & I'll be putting it up for sale to finance the next project. Haven't decided if it's this or my 70' 914 conversion yet. Only time will tell. Thanks again for all the great advice guys. Like the 914 bbs you guys are very helpful. My thanks to Pelican for such a great site too

After seeing the rust by the windshield, Dave was right. Look under each seal, young man!

If I read correctly and it came w/ a rebuilt 915 mag case, you could throw the rest of it away and you still got a screamin' deal.
