Using fog light switch/wiring to power oil cooler fan
Guys,
I am thinking of using the existing wiring/switch to power a fan that I am installing on the stock Carerra cooler. Does anyone see a problem with doing this? Any alternative ideas as to easiest way to wire this up without using a thermoswitch or cutting holes in the dash for an additional switch? Thanks!

It seems to me that the fan in the right front of my '88 Carrera runs full time same as the fuel pump.
But why not just "tape/epoxy" a thermoswitch to the "out-going" oil line. The fan would then run only if needed. Last edited by wwest; 07-17-2010 at 07:54 AM.. |

I used an additional fog light switch located in a dash hole just to the right of the steering column (it might be an unused cruise control hole) leaving the original fog light switch in its place. I dont use a thermostat on the cooler, the fan is operated solely by the switch but i used a factory relay in the fuse panel to avoid the possibility of over heating the switch. Works when I want it on.....

Stevie,
Which factory relay did you use and could you explain how you did the wiring in a little more detail! Thanks much! 86 Targa, PM Sent

I ve in the gararge all day timing my cams.... boy what a job of frustration, but I finally got them dialed in.
Hoyabear, You run a wire from "key on terminal"at the ignition switch to the the new fan (fog light) switch. As a mentioned in my earlier post, i used a fog light switch just to the right of the steering column. Another wire from the fan swith to the fuse panel (this is what turns on the relay and in turn the relay powers the fan). If you use the the factory relay you need to use this part 901 612 333 00 , the relay socket. You don't have to use this set up, any relay will do, just make sure you have a good 12v to the relay. From the relay, a power wire and ground ground wire directly to the fan. I can take a few more pictures tomorrow if you need some ![]() ![]() you can use this part PEL-PP905858 lighted switch from Pelican and something like this PEL-HEL-LMPWK fog light wiring kit (but no longer avail from Pelican)

Thanks Stevie,
I've rigged it up to work right now, using the existing wiring/relay/switch for the fog lights (jumped the #11 fuse to #20 fuse for power). Only problem is that it will only work with the headlights on at this point. I'm working with another pelican (86 911 Targa) to try to figure this out. I think that the issue right now is that there is some sort of headlight-driven switch in between the grey wire (going from the #20 fuse to the dash fog lamp switch) and the blue/white wire (coming from the dash fog lamp switch and going to the fog lamp relay). I think that this switch only lets power flow when the headlights are turned on and unless I can figure out how to bypass it, I'll either have to deal with the headlights needing to be on for the fan to run, or I'll have to go and buy another relay, etc, and give up the idea of using all the leftover fog lamp stuff. One thing that may work would be to run a wire to the #20 straight from the "key on terminal" feed at the ignition switch and then the other wire from #20 to whatever I use as a switch and then splice the blue/white wire from the fog lamp relay into the same switch. Not sure if that takes everything into account though (or if it will leave me with any live leftovers at the end of the day???). Any and all thoughts are welcome! I'm going to bed.
