I finally own a 911!!!

Yesterday, I sealed the deal and drove away in a gorgeous '78 SC Euro Coupe. Earlier this month, I sold my 912E rolling chassis and all the engine parts in order to buy a 911. I now know it was all worth it!!!!

I bought the car from a Pelican member. His Pelican ID is SeaDweller.

For the past week, my emotions were all over the map. However, as I drove the car into the cul de sac and turned around, my face grew to a huge grin. It only took 30 seconds to know I'd made the right choice.

The handling is crisp (EURO ride height from the factory and wide fuchs). The braking is clean. However, the built 3.0L engine was really exciting. I've never driven a car that has so much potential. I need to get back into autocrossing and also try a few driver's ed events. This car is well above my skill level. I have to be honest with myself, even if that means admitting to my lack of skill.

The car is mechanically very strong, so I look forward to years of trouble-free driving. I already have a shortlist of tiny tweaks and repairs that should keep me busy on a few weekends.

Thanks to all who've given me advice and support, and special thanks go out to Mark Wilson, sammy2g, and Jeremy964, who personally viewed 911 I was considering. I owe you guys!!! I also want to thank SeaDweller for putting up with my constant barrage of questions and concerns. This car is an long-term investment in my happiness, and I wanted it to be just right.

I had some doubts about buying an SC. Could this car really be so great when they're owned by characters such as MikeZ(Freak) and Sammy2g-string. :D

Been only 2 days since I was on the 911 BBS, and I have tons of threads to read. :)

Jurgen,

Congrats!! That's a great looking SC, looks like a much later model in that picture. VERY clean. You'll never look back on your decision. Definitely do some DE's, as your car was built for just that. You'll love it. Welcome aboard.

regards and have fun working on your new toy.

jhelgesen 01-29-2003 06:14 PM

Sweeeeet. So thats what it's like to buy one in all one piece. :)

I know you will enjoy it, shame it's not brown though.

Superman 01-29-2003 06:16 PM

Yes, an SC is as good as they say. Congratulations. Indeed, you have made an excellent purchase. Enjoy. And as far as the car being more capable than your limited skill level, I'd say there are few people who can drive a 911 to its potential. We're all unworthy.

nostatic 01-29-2003 06:17 PM

you are now a part of the world domination plot. The secret handshake is in the mail. You will be contacted with further instructions, and be sure to use the cone of silence whenever speaking in tongues.

Congrats on the car...now go drive. :)

Congratulations... Will bring much joy to your life.

Congrats - I knew you wouldn't be dissappointed!

Tim Walsh 01-29-2003 06:55 PM

uh oh another SCWDP member. It's a really nice looking car AND IN ONE PIECE!!! :) ohh wait.. I'm probably the only one to buy a porsche in pieces

Mark Wilson 01-29-2003 07:03 PM

Hey man,
Congratulations on the SC. You won't be dissappointed. All the more sweet that it came from a Pelican.
Mark

Security clearance hasn't come through, of course.

EDIT: Congrats on the car, it's beautiful! Remember, showing the handshake to a non-SCWDP member will result in us telling the board about what you did when you were in third grade. Loose lips, sink ships.

Excellent - welcome to the club.

A word of advice - parts for the Euro cars can be very difficult to find when you need them. If you happen to come across a used CIS system for a Euro '78 or similar year, I would pick it up as a spare. Otherwise, you may be hard pressed to find the part when you need it...

MotoSook 01-29-2003 09:46 PM

Jürgen,

I thought the car looked familiar when you sent me the pix, and then sewdweller posted his sale on the day you said you'd be picking it up. Very very nice. Congrats.

Later,

DonDavis 01-29-2003 10:00 PM

Jurgen,
It looks great! Lets see more pics.

Also, what are the engine numbers on yours? 930/03? And what about the number on the fan shroud vertial surface? Just curious.

Jack Olsen 01-29-2003 10:06 PM

What a great picture. Congratulations.

TonySweets 01-29-2003 10:42 PM

I always thought the Euro cars had Side Marker Lights in the fenders. Here is a side pic of my 81 Euro. When did they start the side marker lights?

That's a very nice looking coupe, Jurgen! Congratulations!

I'm looking forward to seeing many more photos of it! :)

Congratulations Jurgen, and welcome to Porsche ownership and SC World Domination.
Great Looking SC that should get you rolling early this weekend, Enjoy

Welcome to the club! Glad to see the car stay in the Pelican community. I know it must have been pretty emotional for Mike to sell the car, since he's put so much work and effort into it.

Wow, another white Euro SC - good to see some around. BTW, could someone explain the differences between Euro and American CIS systems?

bell 01-30-2003 05:15 AM

Welcome to the SC club.

It's so nice to see an older car so well taken car of and looking so good!!!!

Drive on............

Dougster 01-30-2003 06:08 AM

Congrats! Yes she is a sweet one!

turbo6bar 01-30-2003 07:14 AM

Thanks, guys!

I'm still learning about the car. I'm having doubts I'll be able to keep mileage under 7,000 miles per year (for insurance purposes), but it could always be worse. I could be driving a Ford.

I don't know about the side marker lights on the fender. I need to do some research. This engine is actually not the original one. It is built on an '83 Turbo block and has some special touches, which I am still investigating. The shop that performed the PPI commented this engine pulls like a 3.2L. I'm told the engine would provide another 20-30HP with SSIs along with port-matching the heads. :) This car has 405,000 kilometers on it, but you would never guess that if you saw it in person. A ton of new mechanical parts have been installed, and it has definitely been maintained well through its life. It is not perfect, but very few 25 year old cars are concours perfect. In my opinion, the blemishes and little smudges add character and invite me to drive the car, instead of sheltering it in the garage.

I had considered adding aftermarket EFI in the future, but preliminary fuel mileage seems to be around 23-24mpg driving through small towns and doing 75-80mph on the interstate. That is not bad, from what I've read. I can't justify the expense of EFI for a few mpg extra.

Life sure is good!!! :D

Jurgen

SweetE 01-30-2003 11:39 AM

Really nice car Jurgen.
You mentioned you sold a 912E. I have one for sale and wondered if you would mind letting me know how much you sold it for??

egad, is that downhill with a tailwind? I never get anywhere near that kind of figure.

I guess I should take it out of 2nd gear when I'm on the freeway...

Jürgen:
Great looking car! Congratulations, enjoy it in good health.

Since it was bought from another Pelican, at least the SC faculty (Dr.'s) doesn't increase.

Best,

JP

sroakley 01-30-2003 01:21 PM

Uh oh! Are you supposed to sell your 912 before you get to buy a 911? Nobody told me about all these rules...

turbo6bar 01-30-2003 03:10 PM

Steve, you ask where all your money went, and then you ask why I sold my 912E to buy a 911. Need I say any more? :)

Juergen

mperkins 01-30-2003 04:33 PM

Juergen,
great looking car! i have to agree even more as mine is identical in color, although its a U.S car. what's your interior?
i've got dark navy leather in mine.

however, your front fender turn signal lights are U.S. style
and also, as noted by Tony Sweets above - why aren't your side marker lights on the fenders?

did the PO convert to U.S. trim?

have fun, you'll love this car,
Maurice
1980 SC Coupe.

1980SC 01-30-2003 04:52 PM

It was said earlier in this thread, but the side markers on the fenders didn't show up until 1981.

The front of my euro looks exactly the same. The front running lights on the bumper were probably added when the car was federalized.

Rob
1980 euro

turbo6bar 01-30-2003 05:24 PM

Maurice, my 911 has a black leather interior. I believe it is the stock setup, except for a pair of leather electric seats. I really love the contrast of the black interior + black headliner and white exterior.

I will have to defer to Rob regarding the side markers. The front running lights are definitely a US item. Michael has a pair of very rare rubber Euro blanking blocks (for lack of a better word), which bolted directly in the place of the running lights. Due to their rarity, though, I was unable to secure them with the car. Drats!!! :)

Today, I added another 130 kilometers onto the odometer while running errands all over town. I never thought driving could be so much fun. :D

The car is dirty from the wet streets. I'll wash her this weekend, and take some pics. Stay tuned.

Jürgen, or Juergen without the umlaut.

Adam 01-30-2003 05:34 PM

These rubber blanking blocks?

http://www.members.optushome.com.au/...thumbnail7.jpg

Those rare Euro blocks are standard on every Australian-delivered 911. With the value of our dollar against the US$ (pathetic) there should be plenty of them available at salvage yards around the place for a pittance! If enough people want to buy them, I could look into finding some and shipping a bunch over to you guys...

smarjoram 01-31-2003 04:49 AM

On euro cars the ones without side indicators are usually the 180HP version - and those with are 204HP. Who'd have thought adding side indicators would give you 24HP ; )

Shouldn't bother you though - as you seem to have a different motor.

turbo6bar 01-31-2003 04:55 AM

Yep, that's the right piece. I'd be interested in buying a pair for my car provided they're in good condition.

Anyone else for Euro blanking blocks?

Jürgen

Adam 02-04-2003 12:09 AM

Let me know and I can start to hunt some down for you guys. Our local breakers probably have got plenty of them down here!
