915 stuck in 2nd gear
1974 911 2.7L with later type 915/02 7322175 gearbox that is stuck in 2nd gear. 120,000 miles. Removed dust boot and tunnel cover. Shift lever and **** rod move freely as does shift coupling but gearbox is stuck in 2nd gear. What are the best and worst case scenarios? Thanks.

I can't give you an answer to your question but you might want to look at Gordo2's 915 rebuild thread. He has a nice video of the inner workings of the 915 that could give you some insight as to what is going on.
Here's a link : Gordo's 915 Transmission Rebuild I just did a quick glance through his thread and didn't see the video. If you don't find it, I'll talk to him and ask him where it is. I don't remember what name he goes by on youtube. I just looked again! Page 7 post 137. Here's the video I was thinking of. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcm7EIrA_3w I'd check to make sure you're not getting any slippage between the shift rod, coupler and input shaft of the transmission. My car wouldn't shift once and when I did some looking, I noticed the shift rod was actually slipping on the splines of the coupler. Last edited by cabmandone; 08-22-2017 at 01:30 PM.. |

Try rocking the car back and forth a little, sometimes a bump will release the pressure on whatever is locking it in place.

If that doesn't work then you can try to press in on the reverse light switch, access is in the rear of the tunnel you can see the sensor wires, remove the sensor and use an extension to push the lever back.

And if that doesn't work, drain the transmission and remove the shift fork plate, you should probably do this anyways as it is likely the shift fork that is causing the binding, it might be loose on the plate.

When the shift fork plate is off, you can see the shift rails with a notch in them. Use a screwdriver to line up the notches on both rails and that should fix it for now. There's probably a detent installed in the wrong place from a previous o'haul that allowed this to happen. If a handful of debris comes out with the shift fork plate, disregard the above.

Thanks for your recommendations. I will get on it. I have my hands full with a tricky ETEC 250 outboard on my boat this summer as well. Go figure!
