What kind of summer time oil - too many options!
So I searched the forums here a little bit for some oil and the search was not effective.
I live is southern california. The temperature around here goes from 60 to 90 F. What kind of oil should I get. I do mostly city driving. No track. I have a 1987 911. Thoughts?

Hello - I spoke with a colleague and he recommends a good 20W-50.

Valvoline VR1 racing, It has the higher zink content to keep your cams happy.
A lot of people on the forum use Brad Penn. They buy it on the interwebs. VR1 is available at all the auto parts stores in my area and there have recently been some great deals |

Yes - that "motorcycle" bit is marketing only.
Always tests at the top for things like component wear protection (high zinc, etc), safe operating temperature and flash point (resists coking very well), and has a full detergent additive package so no need for ridiculously short change intervals (like 3K miles), that are common with other "racing" oils. Based on personal experience, I've seen it out perform Mobil 1 15/50 (the car oil not the Mobil one V-Twin oil, which I don't have any experience with) hands down with regard to rocker and cam wear (much lessened wear when the switch was made to a Ducati 748R endurance racer - non-lifter/rockers-on-cams heads). Thanks.
I've heard great things about Motul oil in motorbike circles. |

^ +1 on the Brad Penn oil. It is a bit more expensive, but this is a Porsche and oil is not the place to spend cheaply.

Motul and Brad Penn are good oils, but not readily available. I've been using Mobil 1 15w-50 for over 30 years without any problems. Readily available in 5qt jugs at Walmart for about $23 a jug. It has plenty of Zinc. 1200 ppm

Brad Penn, VR1 or Motul can be plopped on anyone's doorstep in two days via Amazon Prime, so I'd say that's "readily available."

Biggest step change in oil quality is going from used oil to new oil.

![]() This Classic 10w-60 is for the SC and later cars, note that for earlier cars like the 2.7 their Classic 20w-50 is recommended. This is what I've been using in my 87, 4 oil changes so far, once a year, and after 6k miles there is no noticeable oil use.
