You can go to the boat store and get a sacrifical anode. It will last you a lifetime. Or start collecting used zinc batteries....
To get the yellow you need to use a bath of zinc chromate solution. Caswell has, or had, it. |
Caswell's yellow zinc plating system is the extremely toxic hexavalent chromate (as opposed to much safer trivalent yellow chromate). Nowhere near worth the hassle, in my opinion.

Thanks. That’s a really interesting thread link.
Think I’ll be looking for some trivalent yellow chromate. I’m not the safest with chemicals as it is (to my shame) so it’s probably a good idea to choose the slightly more friendly version. Thanks both for solving the ‘why hasn’t it turned out yellow as I expected?’ question :D |
BTW, once you get the chromate solution it will work on any zinc plated hardware, such as what you buy at the hardware store. I bought a bunch of 6 mm nuts and bolts at the local Ace. I dipped them in my chromate and they turned yellow to match the original fasteners on my 911.
I had to replace one of my cam oil lines. The replacement I received was silver! No problem, I dipped it and now it matches the original. Let us know how the chromate you get works. |
Thanks. I’m struggling to find any for sale that isn’t the Caswells version.
I must be using the wrong google search! Can either of you point me in the right direction please :) Thank you! |
I'm afraid I do not know. I still have a bucket of hexavalent stuff that I don't know how to get rid of.
Neat trick with the store-bought fasteners...I tend to prefer silver, but sometimes the yellow offers nice contrast for certain things...That might solve a lot of peoples "where do I get yellow zinc fasteners" issue...if we can find an easy source for trivalent chromate... |
Insane! You bought both of the cars that I've seen on craigslist in the past year and thought "boy if I wasn't saving for a wedding I'd buy this right now!"
Mind if I drop by sometime once I get my Megasquirt tuned? I'd love to see the progress in person if that's not weird. |
Any time :)
Just had a local guy drop around and quote me to paint her. Good price so need some help / motivation to get it moving! For some reason, everyone that see the orange one, falls in love with it. He really wanted to take it home with him, but it’s already spoken for :D Even the Atom made little impact by comparison! I’ll send you a pm. Would be great to have someone over who knows or can point out what part does what! |
Managed to get a new racking system in the garage - keeping the kind lady happy with an inside parking spot...
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1531692498.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1531692498.jpg Got the front seal for the hood taped in place (needs to come off again for spraying) and the hood shimmed and fitted. Great panel from Getty! The seal needs a bit of a squashing though. Cut off the front bumper support to allow the long hood fenders to fit and finally managed an initial fitting of the fender. First time fitted - will need to come on and off a few times by the look of it! Could drive a truck through the gaps at the moment and needs pushing a good 1/3” back. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1531692968.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1531692968.jpg |
14 blinking hours and counting and I still haven’t got the hood and fenders fitting how I would like.
I was told that I need to push the top frame rails in some, with a big hammer and some wood (thanks 962 :) ) but I think in need to work out more. I’ve had the fenders off a dozen times now, maybe more and still I’m not happy with the fit, and I’ve only tackled one side and the hood so far. More work this weekend. Hopefully I’ll get the hood and one side sorted by then.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1532995853.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1532995853.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1532995853.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1532995853.jpg A marginal improvement from the weekend before... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1532995929.jpg But still a long way to go! Dang, I’m glad I don’t work in the car bodywork area. I’d starve! |
A step closer, but still just over 5mm.
A bit more work required I think! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1533684648.jpg Still have the other side to do, too... |
A while ago, I was talking to a guy about cars (as you do) and he told me about an old GTI bug he had in one of his fields.
I went along and had a quick look and saw a pretty together 1970 911 sat there. I unfortunately don’t have the room or talent for it, but a friend who lives two streets away ‘made room’ for it when I told him about it. Yesterday we went along and ‘picked it up’. It was towed out of the field and here she stands in all her glory!http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1534681069.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1534681069.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1534681069.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1534681069.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1534681069.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1534681069.jpg It’s a two owner car. The second owner went back late to college and didn’t bother with the car when he came back. Drove it a little and then parked it up. It’s slowly been relegated further and further from garage to barn to hard standing to field. Last on the road in 2002. It’s amazingly solid, all things considered. The floors will need doing and the front bottom area of the front wheel arch. Otherwise it seems pretty good. Some very minor bubbling at the rear window but that might be due to the repaint. The original color was some shade of brown and it appears to have AC in the car in the smugglers box. It has comfort Fuchs on it too. Fun day out and great finding a 911 :D I don’t know if he is going to keep it, but it turned out way better than I ever thought it might be. Damn, why don’t I own a bigger garage! |
Well after many many more hours than I expected, the front end is kind of getting together.
Still a little way to go, but most of that will be screwing the thing in place and cleaning up.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1536004061.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1536004119.jpg But as with any minor victories, there was a small casualty... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1536004217.jpg The hood jumped off my head as I was balancing it while trying to reset it. It dropped into the hole and nearly hit the floor where the gas tank was missing from. Damn. Oh well, another opportunity to learn how to do something new again. I’m going to drop this in another post, but anyone seen one of these before? It seems to attach to an ‘extra’ switch on the dash and maybe go through the front end wires just laying around (of which there are many as there are no front end lights / horns / indicators / battery connected). http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1536004553.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1536004553.jpg |
Aaaaarrrggghh.
Beautiful day out, so I roll the car out of the garage and keep working on the fenders. Another 4hrs today. What a waste of time. When I walked away (in disgust) they still looked no better than when I started! The problem is the interface at the sill near the door bottom seems to be out. And to add insult to injury, the other side has moved a little, taking that from almost complete, to another little job. Starting to think I should either lower my standards, or get a pro to help out. On the up side I managed to pick up a new windshield for a little over $100 and some well worn seats, so that I have something to sit on while I’m doing it up (another $100 deal). They might even make good cores. Who knows. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1536533917.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1536533917.jpg |
...and I’m still struggling with the fender fitting.
After I managed to get it all lined up at the: Hood Front bumper Windshield scuttle Height correct with Hood and windshield scuttle Door edge I noticed that the wrap around at the bottom of the door sill was lower than the door sill itself by about 1/3”. Damn. Let’s try this again. Soooo (can you tell this is getting frustrating) take it all off again and force the lower sill edge to be in alignment with the bottom of the sill.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1538047048.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1538047048.jpg Now, no surprise, the height at the windshield skuttle is out. So I got the hot air gun out, warmed the grp while pushing down on the fender area where it sits at the top of the door. After 20 mins of careful warming and cooling, I step back and realize that doing this has made the radius around the door line flatter and now has a horrible uneven gap at the apex of the radius. Time to step away from the power tools. I think I need to carefully bend the upper part back again and see if there is an angle I can fit the panel at, which will essentially reduce this height. Failing that, put it back as it was and do some grp surgery at the bottom sill area. Grrrr. Probably 22hrs into this now and I’m still not happy with it! |
Bump. What's happening in this build? Also I want to talk to you about your plastic door handles.
|
'75 build (time) to infinity... and beyond!
Any updates Munky???

Dang this is pretty sweet..
I love the CAD/hand sketched and prototypes. I don't get to do any design at my current engineering job so I might have to get back into it during after hours. Any other progress on this thing? |
