Portable car heater needed....12 V
As the 2 coldest months of the year approach (Jan and Feb), I'm looking to buy a heater/defroster that plugs into the cigarette lighter.
Anyone use anything with success?......Heat in my SC is minimal even when engine warms up (blower doesnt work, etc) |

Might try Pep Boys, O'Reilly or J C Whitney if you're on line mail order.
Good luck, David Duffield |

Not to rain on anyone's parade, but, 10 amps won't produce very much heat, and even that is taxing the wire and fuse that serves the cig. lighter. You may be better served to find the problem with your heating system and fix it. I don't drive my SC in the winter, but I do drive it in early spring to late fall and the heater puts out more heat than I need down to about 25 degrees F. (I, generally, have the levers only half-way up). The blower is really only of value when your stopped.

hi
jerry is right 10 amps max times 12 volt is 120 watts , note that a hair dryer is about 1500 watts.. could you heat the car with a hair dryer? gary

How about a heatable seat? Do later cars have heatable seats?
Also, fixing the blower and other problems may help. If that's all done and there is still not enough heat, buy SSI heat exchangers. I hear they work well with respect to heat also! g |

Tried it. Even in California, where it doesn't get very cold, the thing was worthless. A complete bust.
The heated seat slipcovers would probably help a little -- that, and a rag to wipe the winshield fog.

Growing up on a boat where everything is 12 volt, i can tell you for sure that there is no such thing as a decent 12 volt heater. you could mke millions in the marine industry if you invent one

I know your going to tell me it doesn't get cold in Florida, but I do. Anyway since my pcar has all heater equipment removed I installed a 12v plug under the dash to use my heated vest I have for cool rides on the two wheel beemer. Works great for me. Instant continous heat. Also have heated seats in my boxcar for winter top down drives.

This gets beaten to death once a year on the VW bus list.
12v heaters are worthless. If you really want heat, you can get brand-new gas heaters from Eberspacher and others.

SC's don't have heat? While I've only owned one pcar, my 84 T has that rotary 9 or ten position heater control between the seats and at the first setting, it puts out so much heat I have to turn it off from time-to-time. When off, I get no heat at all. I wish the A/C worked as well as the heat.

I always thought the heat in 911s was good. But when it gets cold (30's or below), its not quite what I thought it was. On my brother's former '89 911, it struggled to keep up in the Denver area. He had it cranked most of the time (and those blower motors get noisey when they're fired up above 7 or 8). On my 930, I pretty much have to run it at 9 all the time to stay comfortable. The GHL headers don't help the cause either.
