HELP: DME # for a 1989 ROW 3.2 M30/20?
Hi,
A while back I posted a picture of the 1989 Euro spec 3.2L engine I was buying. The engine arrived, and I believe it has the wrong DME with it. The engine serial number is *63K04488* and also has 930/20 engraved on it. The Motronic DMA has 911 618 111 06 (BOSCH # 0 261 200 052) I believe the DME should be 911 618 111 18. The 06 is for a 1985 930/26 engine. Anyone else have any advice? BTW, there are no provisions for an O2 sensor on the exhaust system. The hole in the sheet metal engine pan that is for the O2 wiring is also plugged.

Hi Paul:
I'm not sure I know what the "06" DME is for. I could find references to "05", "08", "16" etc, but no "06". There were two M30/20s, one used 911 618 111 19 and the other used 18. The chip is the only real operational difference between these various DMEs. Have you opened the DME? Does it have a 24 or 28 pin Eprom? If it was from an 85, it should have a 24 pin Eprom. Were you planning on using the 02 sensor? I wouldn't replace the DME, just the chip. The 24 pin DME can be easily upgraded to use a 28 pin chip and Steve W perhaps can help on providing an appropriate chip. Some of this may have already been done. Tim |

Hi Tim,
Thanks for the information. I haven't opened up the DME yet, because it looks like you have to bend some tabs, and I may be returning it, or exchanging it. If it looks like I've been inside this may be a problem. I was really looking forward to having one of the later DME where ALL the code is external to the 8051. I was having fantasies about hacking the code. Maybe adding a Knock Sensor input and retarding the spark when it was detected. (That's probably more of a dream, I'm more of a microchip PIC assembly guy than a 8051 guru.) BTW I was told that the "06" was superceded by the "10". I think the "10" was for 1985 930/26 engines. Paul

Paul:
One jumper and a 28 pin socket will allow you to upgrade the earlier DME to use the later 28 pin Eproms with the external code. Do a search. Steve W had already done much of what you mention. Tim |
