Question What else will work? 73 alternator/reg questions

Argh!

Have a 73 with a Marchal alternator and external reg. Hard to find rebuilt/ new exact replacement. This doesn't really surprise me. I have heard that Marchal is no longer. And it has been 30 years! I was thinking that this may be a good time to upgrade. After reading numerous posts and talking with several suppliers I have yet to get a good "here's what to do" answer. I have read the posts and Porsche bulletin on regarding upgrading 1974 to 198> alternators to the internal regulator type. The problem with that this is a 1973 and uses a different part stock. Nevertheless, I recently spoke with a supplier who quoted me $269 for a new Valeo, part number 91160312006 which has a internal reg. This part number crosses to a 1974 here at Pelican. (I'd prefer to get one here but it is NLA). The supplier said it will fit "no problem" and "you can even leave the old external reg in" Confusion and scepticism sets in. They are both 55 amp. Advice? What would you do?
