ID Fuchs Wheel

I found these wheels in a batch of parts. They are 15 X 6 Fuchs that have had the front lip machined off and have been drilled and tapped for studs. I assume this was done to make a lightweight 2 piece wheel. Is anyone familiar with these wheels? Where could I get outer rim halves? Thanks.

Tom

Cool! Perfect for some period correct wide rears. Should be able to pick up some outer halves somewhere to make them into a wide wheel. With only the outer half machined off, they retain their 15X6 offset which would be 36mm. Come to think of it, these would make excellent 7R style wheels for a 77 or earlier narrowbody car as the 49mm offset 7R wheels require a min of 12mm spacer anyway. So you could throw on a 1inch outer half and have some 2pc wheels that you could run a 225/50s on - on a n/b car. Or if you have flares, go 8 or 9inch wide..or more.

I'd be surprised if those were actually studs. Probably use BBS 20 bolt outer halves. That style of wheel was popular with racers back in the day. You should be able to find the halves if you search around.
Here is my version in 16".

Maybe a technicality, but the offset will change with the chosen outer rim half width. The offset is determined by the distance from the midpoint of the tire seating surfaces to the mounting face of the wheel. The back spacing will however remain constant.

Contact Harvey Weidman, Weidman's Wheels in Oroville, CA at 530.534.7903. He can handle this with no problem I am sure. When it comes to Fuchs wheels he is your man.

If the studs are threaded into the aluminum that is an extremely poor design. All sorts of bad with that design. Aluminum threads holding tiny studs that hold your wheel together? No way. Those AL threads would pull out at any sort of load.

But, I encourage you to get a second opinion. Call BBS with your measurements to see if they have rim halves. Then ask to speak with one of their engineers: ask what they think about the outer barrel being held on with steel studs threaded into a machined aluminum wheel. Not to mention the aluminum wheel is fifty years old.

Maybe, maybe, they got away with it trundling around to the disco club on 80's tire technology. Today's tires would rip those threads out IMO.

Cut-to-modular Fuchs are already a questionable idea as the centers are already fatigued. Also it loads the wheel center in a way it may not have been designed for.

Even if the aluminum threads were strong enough (which they aren't), unless the stud hardware is specially coated (doesn't look like it), then galvanic corrosion has likely already started to eat both the aluminum and steel.

They're good for a coffee table, not much else IMO.
