1984 Carrera Targa

Hello all, a newbie here to Porsches, I have just taken ownership of a 1984 Carrera Targa that is going to need a lot of TLC.

Never owned a Porsche before been an old (read 1933) Morgan man till now so I have limited knowledge of the car.

It has had an aftermarket stereo and funky amp added, amp was under the pass seat, that has come out so I could do with a wiring diagram to see how the original radio was connected

Also an aftermarket steering wheel was added, way too small for my aged arms, plus the horn has been lost, I want to replace with an original, where would be the best source?

I found the horns under the front right fender, is this corrrect?

Plan is to get the car back on the road as a driver as near original as possible not concours

I appreciate any help and ask patience as I climb the steep learning curve

Peter

Congrats Peter! Post a pic of the car so we can get an idea of what you have. This forum is a library of information and simple searches can get you answers quickly on a lot of stuff.

As for the horn, the classifieds here are great. The horn button switches ground. Horns are located where you found them.

Good luck.

The 3.2!!! My mechanic says they are the best 911's ever made. Very reliable with terrific fuel injection. Take your time and have fun!

Welcome to the fold! I had a TR3 and a MGB before seeing the light and getting my first Porsche in 1974. I have owned one or more ever since, and also enjoy my '84 Targa. Great car!

Get a Bentley manual to give you the most info on the cars. Pelican Parts also has a lot of info available on their website and the knowledge base on the Forum is great (and even correct occasionally ).

And yes, the horns are in the right front fender. Post a WTB ad in the classified section to try to find a wheel (or perhaps someone may want to trade for your aftermarket wheel).

This isn't directly for an '84, but should be very similar if not identical.

Thanks for the welcome, first major issue is the factory alarm system, there is a key switch on the door jamb but I do not have the key and local Porsche agent says they cannot help. Unfortunately I do not know if it is on or off and what it does. If I connect a battery I get a clicking like a turn signal from somewhere under the dash but it is not signals, any clues or is it part of this alarm system?

I dont know what the switch does if it is a simple on/off or something far more clever

Anyone know please?

Will post pictures soon as I can

Peter

Congrats on the new car. Best place to look for an OE steering wheel would be to Pelican classifieds, they turn up there quite often, or you could post a want to buy ad.

I recommend getting a Bentley manual for your car. It has wiring diagrams (although they aren't perfect).

Find the round relay (above the fuses) that goes to the horn. With the key on press the horn button and listen for the relay to click. If it clicks the ground at the horn button is good. This doesn't mean that the relay is good though. Pull the relay out and jump 30 and 87 (key on) and the horns should work. If they work with the jumper then your relay is bad. Plug one of the other relays in and try it.

As far as I know,

The factory system had the key switch on the door itself, not the jamb.
Was on the rear edge of the driver's door when it was open..

If it's on the jamb, it's probably aftermarket.

Congrats and welcome. This forum is a tremendous resource.
Sometimes you can get lucky and get a pdf of the user manual for free just by searching here or the internet.
You can also do a search within this forum by using the keywords you're interested in - to find out if someone posted an answer to a similar question years ago - it's that great.

Another helpful document is the "PET katalog", also a pdf, which is a large parts catalog with exploded views of almost everything. You can use the part numbers here to look at and buy stuff!

Please show us a picture of your car (the Morgan too) - its kind of a rite of passage.
cheers!

1984 Carrera Targa

OK if I have done this right attached are photos of the cars, if not I will have to try again.

I have spent the day fighting the electrical gremlins that reside in the car, have the windows working now, still fighting the horn and radio speakers.

I have found a plain aluminum box up near the firewall any clues? I still cannot locate the ticking noise when the battery is connected, it appears to come from under the dash but I have not located yet, any clues??

Peter

Beautiful color! The Morgan is incredible. What is the Tricycle with the picnic basket? The engine looks very interesting from what I can make out.

To your question about the box, see if there is a part number stamped on it of the form 9xx-xxx-xxx-xx. It'll be easily searchable. It could be p/o of the alarm system or maybe cruise control, but these are guesses. Someone else may know offhand.

I also have an 84 Targa, with an aftermarket stereo that doesn't work. The last thing I will ever put in the car is a new stereo, lol. I like to keep the top off and listen to the wind and engine.

Congrats on the car, these are a blast to drive.

Welcome! Plenty of helpful folks here. Congrats on the Targa! FYI, best to familiarize yourself with the search function here. Super helpful little tool. Saves you a lot of typing.
