2.7l with K26 Turbo Project

Hi everyone,

I thought I'd share what I've been working on for the past few weeks.

First, a shot of my car pre-project:

And here's a shot of the current status of the project:

The basics are as follows:

I'm using a K26/6 turbo from a 944 turbo, mainly because I had the turbo but also because it seemed to fit the 2.7l 911 engine pretty well. I'm no expert on reading a turbo map, but the motor seemed to fall into the right areas on a map I found online.

Headers are used OBX that I got a few years ago. They're in nice shape and fit up perfectly.

Ignition and fueling are controlled by the ms3/ms3x I already have in the car.

Ignition is provided by six LS2 truck coils that I've mounted on the valve covers.

You can see how I fitted the coils in this picture:

Muffler a Magnaflow oval unit that I got from Amazon. It seems really nicely constructed and TurboKraft uses the same brand, so I think I should be in good shape.

I think I'm about ready to install the motor and try to start it up. Possibly will happen tonight. I'll post more if anyone is interested.

Super cool project. Can you tell me more about your intake setup? Was the motor rebuilt and what cams, p/c, and intake/exhaust size are you running to allow the late model intake setup?

I like your fan too is it just paint? Would like to see more details on the ignition mount on the valve covers.

Sweet! How is the drain configured? Are you running an electric scavenge pump?

I've owned the car for 17 years (?!?!?!) and as far as I know, the motor has never been opened. So it should be all stock internally. I have a thread somewhere about the intake conversion, but I basically just made some aluminum spacers for the transition to the intake.

The fan and intake are both cerakoted. It's a two-part ceramic finish that is popular for firearms. I found it works great for car stuff as well. It's tough as hell and crazy thin.

I'm draining the turbo directly to the sump plate using -10an PTFE hose. If I end up with problems with that arrangement, I'll probably go with an electric scavenge pump.

Well... after several months of screwing around - IT IS ALIVE.

And it is FAST.

I got super frustrated trying to get the car to run right, and ended up buying a chinacharger off of eBay. It’s a fake gt3076r, with journal bearings instead of ball bearings.

Turns out I had simply mixed up two injector wires, so only four of the six injectors were firing!

I swapped the wires and took the car out today. It was... shocking. It doesn’t really come onto boost until around 3500 rpm, but when it hits... wow. Third gear hit so hard I thought the front wheels were going to come off the damn ground. I think bigger torsion bars are going to be necessary.

I’m running 10 psi, btw.

Glad you have it running... And that its fast.

Tune carefully before you really get into boost. The 2.7 case will not tolerate tuning sins.

Anyone have any idea why my idle is so rich? I have the idle cells on the VE table down to around 0.3-0.5, but the car is still idling around 11.5:1. I'm guessing I have some setting wrong somewhere, but I'm not sure what I need to change. Any thoughts? Where to start, perhaps?

Do you want pulled head studs? Because this is how you get pulled head studs.

Seriously - Cool project. I guess stock compression on a 2.7 is only ~8.5:1,
right? Seems like a good candidate for a turbo if you can tune it well to prevent the case from coming apart...

Either your injectors are too big or your dead time is wrong or both.

Maybe stupid question but you do have vacuum hose connected to the ECU from the intake manifold right?

Also if you run out of tuning space in VE table I suggest to lower req fuel constant (injector size constant) and adjust VE table accordingly.

Hmm... I have 48 lbs/hr injectors. They're from Accel, but they're just rebranded Siemens-Deka injectors. 48 lbs/hr might be a little on the larger size for my car, but I didn't think they were big enough to cause a problem.

I have dead time set to 1.200 msec, which I think came from a bunch of digging around and looking at data for the Siemens-Deka injectors. But I could be 100 percent wrong with that number.

Injectors I'm using (current injector is on top):
