My 73"S" is about 90% original. The car was owned by a collector before I got it and I didn't register it for about 10 years. Neat car.

Uh...10% original? I still use the tub, trans (diff gearing), block, and dash. That's about it.

What's been changed, front to back: fiberglass spoiler, headlights, fiberglass hood, later-model AC condensor, battery, Carrera and aftermarket oil coolers, later struts, Turbo tie rods, shocks, torsion bars, antisway bars, gas tank, Turbo brakes, 7x8x16 Turbo Fuchs, aftermarket windshield, 965 leather dash, pedals, SC rockers, center console, VW cup holder, 930S steering wheel, Corbeau seats, fiberglass map pockets, roll bar, aftermarket stereo, amp, CD player, speakers, deleted rear seats, new leather, later-model rear glass, 964 decklid, 964 engine, Carrera exhaust, aftermarket muffler, rear trailing arms, shocks, torsion bars, SC flares, fiberglass rear bumper, groovy rounded license plate panel.
What's stock? The tub, brake master cylinder, switches, door handles, steering column, the transaxle, side glass. Jeez, when I first bought the thing -- what was I paying for? ------------------ Jack Olsen My Rennlist page • My Pelican Gallery page • My Porsche Owners Gallery page [This message has been edited by JackOlsen (edited 10-25-2001).] |

Easiest for me to answer in terms of what has been replaced on my '86...
Headlights (with H1s) Exhaust (test pipe w/ stock muffler) 9" rear Fuchs Torsion bars Sway bars Koni shocks/struts AM/FM/CD, amp, and speakers or modified... Airbox Airflow meter Ride hieght reduced or added... Roll bar (behind the seats) All else is stock... so what % is that? By weight I'd say it is 86% original. By part count I'd say it is 99% original -- most cars have several thousand unique pieces if you count fastners, washers, seals, and the internals of engines and trannies. In terms of ride/handling I'd say it is 1% original. -- John |

If you still have it in 20 years, let us know what the status is. BTW, what was the point of your question? Sherwood Lee '69 http://members.rennlist.org/911pcars |

it is not a contest sherwood, no need for sarcasm i was just curious. i was thinking about cars and lifespans of things. inevitably over a cars lifetime there are going to be parts that need to be replaced. i was thinking there may be an equation in which the vehicle, through the natural processes of aging and wear, go through a transformation from factory original to a conglomerate of replaced parts. i can't think of another make that has so many survivoring vehicles over the years and was wondering about actual experiences by the members here. next time when asking a question i will give full reasoning behind it for the benefit of sherwood. ------------------ Daryl Planter 91C2 Targa |

Daryl. Are we even? The longer a vehicle survives, the more original content will be lost through breakage, replacement, upgrades, accidents and corrosion. 911s were not built for obsolescence as parts interchangeability has spanned some 20 years. If 911s changed body styles and running gear every few years (like other makes), I think you would see fewer examples in as good a shape as we see them today. Sherwood Lee |

Hmmm....If you think of it your way, my bone stock all original 85 Carrera ain't so original after all! My car has needed:
-new tires -new brake pads and rotors -new belts, spark plugs, oil, filters ect. -new window switches -new clutch assembly complete -new tranny coupler, bushings, synchros -new targa vinyl, headliner, seals -new chin spoiler -new fuses, wiring -new inside door release handles I think that is it! All the parts were replaced w/ oem replacement parts. The car currently has 44,xxx miles on it. |

If a car is older than 20 years (maybe even less than 20 years), original rubber fuel line and brake elements are a safety concern. A beautiful original interior lost to an engine fire would be ironic and tragic. Jim

The only moving parts on my 1970T that have not been replaced/modified are the steering mechanism and the various doors/hinges. Oh,
and the A-arms. |

I've got a feeling there's several early 911s out there with original brakes, shocks, wheel bearings, clutches, hood shocks, radio, rear view mirror, door side pockets, dash, clock, lower valve covers, chain tensioners, A/C and shifter/suspension bushings. Amazing. Mine have long since departed this dimension ... but replaced.

Too much of mine is still original. Keep wanting to fix it, but it won't break. I've performed the normal maintenance. Replaced shifting coupler, clutch cable, Targa seals, etc. Hasn't needed an major mechanical work yet. May get to replace oil return tube soon. Leaks a few drips if not driven every couple days. 84 Carrera with 75K.

With the exception of my Recaros, my racing harness, my new Dunlop Formula FM901s, my 10.5:1 JE pistons, my new piston rings, my new cylinders, my GE-60 cams, my new valves, my new bearings, my new gear synchros, and the new coat of paint, the car is pretty much as it was when it left the line at Zuffenhausen way back in '74.

I have no idea how original my car as a whole is , but I know that my engine is the original unit installed at the factory.
My question I guess OT, but what premium does this place on the car? Or rather what would it deduct on a typical 911 if it does not have the correct "matching numbers"? |

I don't mean to nitpick as I'm sure the concours guys have a better idea, but there is a definite line drawn between original and replacement parts, even from Porsche.

Stock, gee let me count the parts, chassic, front fenders, doors, chassic wiring, rear brakes, I think thats all, my 1971 911E is not a virgin in fact pwd71s calls her the slut.
There are lots of parts that are new replacement, and as many that are what I wanted not what was there(Jack understands this!)My car is a mix mash my Porsche lust, from C-2 style door panels to the early 1966 style of door trim piece (the one that the door lock button goes up thru) I liked the early style rather than the stock big fat thick ones. 1983 motor and 915 tranny. Remember guys, it is your car, do with it what you want, but remember it's only a car! The most importand think to remember is to have fun, enjoy, and "DRIVE" your car, garage queens suck (Hear me pwd72s). Randy Jones 1971 911 |

Alright- I'm going for the top spot on this one people. No fair if you've got a full-on race car- my car when finished will still be streeted.
Original: -Tub, but with let's say 10% sheetmetal replaced -tranny, but rebuilt -steering linkage/rack -shift linkage -Rear and side glass -oil tank -wiring harness Transplanted/new: -Engine -Trailing arms, A-arms, all struts, sway bars, torsion bars, hubs, brakes, wheels, steering wheel, all bearings/bushings, wheels, tires, halfshafts. -All interior- steering wheel, seats, upholstery, headliner, heater boxes, heater controls, wiper motor, fan motor, interior lights, switchgear. -Doors, hood, decklid, windshield, mirrors, door handles, headlights, turn signal assemblies, lenses. Did I leave anything out? hehehe. My "work in progress" name for my car is "Frankie." But I've purchased most of the major items except for top end rebuild, seats, SSI, and paint- and haven't spent nearly as much as you might thing. -d ------------------ Dave '72 911T to '73 RSR Replica Project |
