Difference between 911/81 & 911/85

Hi everybody,

I'm facing some problems to register in Switzerland an US imported 1977 911s.

The registration office argue about the fact that the 911/85 engine that has my car isn't the same of the 911/81 sold in Switzerland at that time. The problem apparently concern the specigication about pollution and noise.

It's possible to find somewhere if the two engine have the same spec?

My engine number start with 627(3136), the european one's started with 637(xxxx).

Tks a lot for your help
Max

Type 81 is a EURO ROW engine
Type 85 is the US engine.

Ironically, your US engine is the lower smog engine as it was originally equiped with an Air pump, EGR filter, and Thermal Reactors.

You can pick up the Red book and take that to the committee. The engine itself (I THINK) has the same exact specs. The difference is in the add-on devices mentioned above.

The specs for both type 81 and 85 are as follows:

90mm bore, X 70.4mm stroke
2.7 ltr, 2687cc
8.5:1 compression ratio
k-jetronic fuel injection
165 hp at 5800 rpm
176 ft lbs torque at 4k rpm

I'd get the spec book. The numbers change but the internals are the same. Cam settings may be different or the exhaust can be different.
Some of the 77 euro s I've seen were without power brakes, no helper spring on the clutch arm, 8.0 CR for 150 horses, with T CIS cams.
Spec book will tell you

My car's original engine was a 911/81. In my 10 years or so of messing with that engine, I never found a difference between it and a US-spec engine.
