When removing the distributor on a 72 2.4 is there any way ..
When you take off the distributor is there any good way to put it back exactly where it was to keep timing the same??
I have a timing light and can obviously re-time things, but I'm mid chain tensioner upgrade and should have checked exactly where the timing was because the engine was running very well pre upgrade. Thoughts? |

Put the engine at TDC and be sure to make a mark between the dist. body and the tin. You could use WhiteOut or a scribe to do this.

reference your location on where the distributor bolts down and the location of the rotor. you do not need to get it on top dead center unless you plan on turning the motor over. i normally will index id with a punch to make marks on both peices or you can use a paint marker.

There is a notch on the the rim of the dist that the rotor will point to when the motor is at TDC no 1 cylinder.
It's approx about 5 o'clock when looking down at it. This will prevent you being 180 out, but you will will still need to set it. 3 ATDC at 900 if I remember correctly, (if I'm wrong I'm sure somebody will jump on me) Jeff 2.4T

Another trick to preserve your timing is to put a piece of masking tape across the case up onto the dizzy. Spray a little paint at the tape, you will have a sharp line when the tape is pulled. Use cheap paint and wipe off with acetone after re-install.
