How much would a good paint job cost?
Hello all, I have a black 82 SC and I've been thinking about getting it painted. I was wondering how much I should plan on spending for a good paint job, prep work and all. Thanks

When I had mine painted....I stripped the car myself before taking it into Maaco.
I was not looking for a concours job...just a colour change. Stripping it myself was the luckiest thing I have ever done. The previous job must have been left out in the rain after the first coat of primer....it got "rust spots" like measles all over the car....then they shot second (different colour) over the first primer...and then the top coat. If I had not stripped the car to bare metal, it would have fallen apart in a short time. The Maaco job was about $1300 Can. This was for "build primer" and a single coat consisting of colour and clear. It turned out surprisingly good. Hope this helps. Bob

Sorry I guess I didn't go into enough detail....I am looking for a respray, I want to keep it the same black, so I don't see a need to pull the interior and paint the tub. It has a some dings and chips so it'll need good prep work. I don't have the time to do it myself, although I'd like to.

Plan on t least 5K. Some will charge you a lot more. 911's need to have the bumpers removed and the front fenders loosened at the top by the cowl to remove the plastic welting. Late cars have to have the rockers removed.
The front and rear glass should come out and the weatherstripping at the base of all the side windows needs to be removed. This means the rear quarter windows out as well. Door handles and the antenna have to be removed. Some painters will remove the door seals. Thresholds should be removed. On color changes all the jamb hardware needs to come off, but since you're not doing that, blending the jambs will work nicely. At the hoods, the badging and grill must come. Then there's hours of masking the engine and trunk, the interior, exterior and the wheel wells. Hours and hours of preparation and finally the easy part, painting. Then, you get to put it all back together. |

What milt said. There is also a lot of while you are in there stuff. Once you have nice shiny paint your rubber seals and trim parts will look tired. Replacing all of the rubber bits runs around $1,500. If you are pulling the glass a new headliner is probably worth doing too depending on the condition of your old one.

A PROPER job would be to take it down to metal, glass out, doors and lids off, block & sand and respray using original Glasurit paint.
You're looking at $1500 just in paint and materials. ![]() ![]() ![]() Anything else is just a compromise. I'd budget $8K minimum and that would be to hire a team of monkeys.

What Milt said.
Had mine done about five or so years ago. Color change from UPS brown to Yellow. Soda blasted to bare metal. All glass out. Fenders, hood, doors deck lid off. Powder coated all brite metal to black. I chose to replace all the rubber seals etc. I got a deal at $7K... Took a month but I'm very happy. Duck was installed later. ![]()

I think it depends in part where you are in the country. I just had my 944 repainted, lots of bodywork required (there were numerous dents and dings) took about a month in the shop. East Central Florida. Total cost $3000

Mine came in at about $10,000.00 plus $2500.00 for box rocker install and a minor repair.
Original Restorations in Courtenay BC had the my 930 for about two months and did a class job on the car.Could not have asked for better quality in workmanship, attitude and genuine concern for my being happy with the result.Car has since won first place in division in two PCA show&shines and one first overall.

Price is largely impacted by amount of repair work, amount of dissassembly, amount of prep work, cost of materials, if seals are replaced, if you are changing the colour, and as kilodawg mentioned - your geographical location.
Different people have different standards. I would not opt for a colour change without a complete dissassembly nor would I opt to have anything but a tear down to bare metal shot with Glasurit. That is not to say that you can get by with less and still not have a real nice looking car. My cost was also $10K with another $1100 in seals replaced, with $300 in a rust repair and some minor cost adder for deleting the rocker panels. All glass was out, all doors, lids, etc were removed and jams were also resprayed while retaining all factory decals. This is also including blocking the entire car and aligning all panels to perfection. Anybody in the bay area interested in this level of work shoot me a PM.

Glad I read this post mine is going in for paint and the local Porsche specialist resto/paint guy said anywhere between 8-10K depending on what he finds when he strips the already repainted/changed color paint on it now (see rust spot below).I freaked out and went elsewhere, not knowing that 10K was close to the norm.He is the best and does the media blast windows out prime/seal and let sit for a week to dry, then finishes w/Glasurit.He does $100k 356 full on restos,so I know hes the man here locally.I have seen his work and his cars are making excellence mag/winning best of show in paint and finish. But I had to go to other people with good reps andcheck them out to.They all quoted at least 8K on up to 12k for a "done right" job,so needless to say,Im going with the Porsche specialist. He will also be changing colors, all new seals, and headliner,he even offered to do the trunk and engine bay at extra cost If I want.
Crazy part to me is,for 10K,I can get another 911 SC...so Im really torn...do I have a top of the line paint job on my 911SC,or put it elsewhere?????So confused, also car will be gone for at least 6 weeks, not sure yet. ![]() Also,I bought the car for 6K....thinking I got the great deal, which i have been told I have...since then, have dropped another 8-9K in it,and now wanting $10K in paint, still needs engine work....... ![]() ![]() Last edited by nippy; 07-24-2010 at 08:21 PM.. |

Nippy,
At least you started off low on your purchase price. *** You don't do this unless you love the car and plan to keep it! *** I have $39K into my car ($40.5K after today) for that price I could have a hell of a nice 993 but you know what? I've had a hell of nice 993 and I didn't care for it. I've has some super nice cars that I have paid $40K for in the past but THIS is what I find most enjoyable. I've been fortunate to have owned 6 other 911s so I know what I like. I highly recommend you take care of your engine issues before the paint. I think having a reliable 911 is first and foremost important than how it looks. It took me 3 years to pull the trigger on the paint; the car had to EARN that!

Thanks ...my friends been asking me,is this a hobby...do you love the car,do you plan on keeping? Its my first 911 and I'm just a young guy who had some cash at the right time I got the car.It has drained me pretty good. However,I am addicted to the car,the sound, the smells, the smallness/lightness and driving sensations. However,it looks ruff and I loose the motivation to make it nice when dropping money in it and it still looks like sheet.
Anyway,I love the car,I used to drool over 997 turbos and now I love the older air cooled cars, they have so much character.I don't know, just drove her about an hour ago,she having fuel delivery problems...so i need to get that straightened out.Not to mention the gages are needing attention.Oh well,I'm a car nut and this is what we do.. PS I also knew very little about the cars when I bought it,I have driven allot of them and worked with them through auto detailing company and now a wheel bis,but didn't know anything about true charater/internals/etc...So I have paid and loss some $$ on dumb mods like big wheels...now going by by for new Fuchs.... I have a spreadsheet that tracks all the cost I have in my SC hotrod. I try not to look at it and just enjoy the car. I now have my perfect 911, in the color I want, with the interior I want etc. and it looks and drives like a new car. I just love it to pieces. Makes me smile every time I go into the garage.
