1971 911 Durant Mirror: Disassembly ?

I would like to know if any of you could tell me how to disassemble an original 1971 round 5" Durant mirror. Mine is in excellent condition but the mirror housing (upper) to base mount (lower) would benefit from being tighter; and I hear bits of rust behind the mirror glass that I'd like to remove.

Thanks!

In order to tighten the mirror housing, you must remove the glass and that entails removing the black plastic ring that secures the mirror glass to the housing. How that is done, I don't know, but it may be possible to find an auto mirror restorer that can do the task. If you try to do it yourself, you risk ruining the ring. Reproduction mirrors are available, so it's possible the manufacturer of those have access to reproduction rings to fit their mirrors. If those are attainable, is another question. It's always possible that you can remove the ring by breaking the glass and replacing it with a new piece--it seems it would be much easier to find replacement mirror glass than the ring.

I do believe someone on the forum has done a repair, but that was many years ago. Maybe someone else can remember and provide a link.

Edit: After reading the post below, I may have misunderstood the issue. I thought you had a loose mirror housing, not a loose pivot. Removing the mirror will allow you to see if there is access to the pivot that can be tightened. Know that the underside of the base has a cover with only a slot for the mounting bolts, but there is a larger, round part of the slot in which you might be able to insert a tool to tighten the pivot.

Pretty sure you're going to have to pull the mirror of the door to get to the pivot inside the mirror housing

Thanks, the mirror is off the car, and I think you are right Ossi, the round trim ring would need to be removed, just not sure how. I noticed the pivot from the underside of the mirror base but couldn't determine how, if any, to tighten the "spring pivot".

Hopefully someone will be able to tell us.

Thanks again!

I've done it on mine. You need to get under the black ring to slowly pry all the way around. The ring will eventually pop leaving the mirror loose to remove.

Black Trim ring removal

Norm, Did you pry the black ring out from the surrounding metal housing or the glass side?

Heat up the black retaining ring with a hot air gun.
Using something thin carefully prise out the black ring from the stainless housing. It may lighty mark the plastic and the stainless lip may deform. Mine did a little but I managed to staighten it out and you can't tell now. I also managed to smooth out the mark on the black plastic.

This link below shows the internals.

I drilled out my bolt as it was impossible to release.
