In the snow

I thought this stuff was supposed to come after midnight?! Anyway, got out of the MD/UVA game tonight to a few inches of snow. Since the Honda quit on me this week I am driving the Porsche until the new Mini comes in. Ok, first time with the SC in the snow. I was surprised how the car handled, even with the 17s and re730's. I was even more confident whenever I felt the rear come loose, I knew exactly what to do. Thanks PCA for DE and HPDC!

With the snow we've had here recently I've been doing some unintentional sideways driving. It's great fun. Those garage queens don't know what they're missing out on!

Glad to see I'm not the only who's never quite gotten 'lock it up for the winter'... I was kinda tickled when I first joined the board two years ago listening to how passionate so may are in their efforts at maintaining pristinity. Don't misunderstand, I have a beautiful car and I work on it most weekends to keep it that way. But don't think for a minute that it doesn't get driven daily, see a dirt road, ice or snow from time to time, carry a girlfriend, dog and a rabbit and all our junk to our cabin on the lake. My car's no shrine to Ferdinand, Ferry and Butzi in so many words, but there's no bigger fan of the mark than I and this car is out playing in the world, every day no matter what. Roll brothers!

The snow continued through the night and morning. 6" and counting, although I think its mostly gone. My P-cars are still asleep under cover. I was tempted to break out the targa but there must be several tons of salt every mile on the roads here in the DC area. I am truly amazed at how much they put down on the roads.

For the record, my car is stored in the winter due to salt, not snow. I have worked on plenty of cars that were year 'round drivers and the salt really does a number on undercarriage bolts, bleeder screws, etc. to the point that nearly all of them break off when you try to loosen them. When I performed my first project on my 911 I was absolutely amazed how FUN it was to work on a car that didn't require gallons of WD-40 to free up rusted fasteners. Working on my car was fun again.

That said, if Minnesota didn't use salt I can't imagine any vehicle that would be more fun in the snow than my Carrera.

Enjoy it guys!

Same Here !

It is even worse: my baby sleeps outside. I wish I had a garage, but housing is not cheap here in New-Jersey... Today, there is already 1 ft of snow, and still falling. I hope she won`t get a cold...Few days ago, she would not start, but after blowing some hot air in the airbox and the distributor cap, I got the engine running. Condensation I assume... All you need is an hairdryer

My car is down for the count this year for an engine rebuild, but in years past I've avoided cold weather driving because my defogger is so marginal. What do you guys do when its cold and wet to be able to see?

If you have a Targa, you can take the top off, keep the heat to the maximum and wear a good hat ! It is really the best way to defog that windshield in the winter ! Of course, if it is raining or snowing, I have no solution...

Unknowingly at the time, I bought a car with a heated windshield. It didn't work so I assume the last owner never knew about it either but its great in colder climates!

I squeezed in a couple hours of driving in the 911 yesterday morning. Yahoo! Today, I'm stuck with the daily driver - the M3. There's something satisfying driving past SUV's in the ditch on my hard, 40-series Toyos!

Rock on, snow brothers. My 911 wears Blizzaks this time of year. $351 well spent at TireRack!

The best part was last weekend when it snowed and I went up to the park on the hill next door. There were a few people up there - all of them in SUVs - who stared as I honked, waved, and did donuts in the empty adjacent snow-covered parking lot.

Salt doesn't concern me. I know it's not good for the car but that's the breaks of being a car. I occasionally take the car down to the U-Wash-It and spray the underside. Otherwise, it's no big deal on a fully galvanized '86.

Body panels are galvanized. Bleeder screws, fasteners, brake calipers, rotors, suspension components, valve covers, engine cases, etc. are not. To each their own.

The roads here look like the salt truck over-turned on them and all of that salt would just love the opportunity to feast on my car. My 911 prefers the confines of her heated garage where she can watch the salt and slush drip off the other two inhabitants. Besides, what better time to upgrade components that when the car can easily spend 6 months on jackstands without depriving the owner of driving days?

I just shovelled some of the driveway. Under the snow I was greeted with nice skid marks from my attempt to scale the driveway last night. Oops.

My 911 stays in the garage and covered in winter. This time of the year the Land Rover gets the nod. Not a bad arrangement.

My car too, unfortunately, sleeps outside, covered. I had the opportunity to wake her up the other day, though! We had a day of rain followed by a beautiful day that dried it up. I told my wife I would be back in a little while and she just gave me a sly smile and said "grab the phone!" It was after work so it wasn't nearly as long as I wanted, but it was good to be back in the saddle!

I meant to take a picture this morning with it covered in about 5 inches of snow, but cleared it and the other cars off, then proceeded to fire up the Gravely. It has a plow on the front so I cleared ours and some of our neighbors' drives; almost but not quite as much fun!

I had the pleasure (?) of driving home last night in the SC during the peak of the snow/sleet falling, and before the plows had come out. It would have been kinda fun if it wasn't for my severely inadequate heat and defrrrrost! The pavement was the consistancy of a Slurpee. This was one instance where I didn't miss the ABS on our Land Rover. At least I had control over when the brakes were applied! (for those of you who haven't "experienced" ABS in a Land Rover Discovery, they leave alot to be desired)
