Cost to retrofit 930 brakes?

The previous thread got me thinking about this.
How much would a retrofit cost and what all would you need?

I'm thinking used/rebuildable 917 style '78/9 calipers and rotors, a rebuildable master cylinder, and whatever adaptive hardware needed.

Is this worth doing given the age of the technology vs cost?

How much is all this stuff worth on the used market?

New job and the first 2 paychecks seem spent already. You've got a good woman. 7 broken head studs later I'm almost ready to get Iris back on the road. I'll keep you posted. Congrats on the gainful employment.

Dunno for sure on the cost, but Tom Wikinson said a Mercedes master cylinder was used when the Turbo brakes installed on his car. I dunno why, but a cost of $1,500 or so comes to mind...

Rarly:

Assuming that you have none of the parts, and depending on what you can find at swap meets, etc, the cost is probably between 2500-3500 if you don't do the machining.

Rotors with hats for the front are 700/pr, rears are 300/pr. rear maching 400, calipers ???

While I love the 930 brakes on our Turbo, There is no doubt you can do better with today's technology.
Remember that the 930 brakes really shine on HIGH (read: warp) speed decelerations, where weight transfer is the greatest. Otherwise, you'd be better off with an adjustable bias setup if you want to use the 930 setup.

You can save yourself a lot of aggravation and grief by sourcing from a single vendor

For complete 930 setups the 2 best sources at the current time are

Steve Weiner at Rennsport Systems

Here is a pic of his set

or

Doug Arnao at VCI
Here is a pic of his set

Each kit has its + and - but I like Steve's kit better for technical reasons. On a '78 SC you can get away w/ the stock boosted m/c but a 930 boosted m/c will bolt right on and give you much better feel. The boosted 930 m/c is $155 here at Pelican.

The newer Brembos also available from Pelican do offer some advantages over the older 930 design, but do have one major flaw in that larger wheels are necessary w/ them.

You will end up spending~$3000 + or - any way you do it unless you can get a great deal somwhere. They do exist.

I'd like to point out that since you have a widebody, your row is a little easier to hoe. You can use 930 front brakes right out of the box on your car; you only need the 10mm (?) spacers for the calipers.

I'm using the stock master cylinder, although I bought a 930 M/C on ebay for cheep, just never got around to installing it.

I did the 930 brakes for around $2700 to $3k. Although I think I could do it cheaper now that I have done it. And I would do it again.

I have paid

Calipers $600
Discs $100
Hubs $300

Machining work will cost about $100

But that is in the UK with a lot of research and bargaining.

Will the 930 set up fit under 15" Fuchs?

Hey Rich, if ya ever make it up to Tampa give me a call. My brother is there now and I'll be needing a reason to take a trip down more often. Funny you mensioned the spending. Now that I have a JOB the spending must slow down - we have to buy another house! Don't that just tear it!

What machining will need to be done to get these on my '78 SC?

Another question - how do 930 brakes compare to SC brakes when it comes to slow traffic style cold stopping? Any quirks?

Nick, those are great prices. Is that for new disks?

Yes they will fit under 15" wheels. You have to mach the rear calipers and remove the ears for the rear dust shields.
Only one quirk. The floating rotors make a clacking sound at low speeds. Go with the 23 mm master cyl. You will have a high hard pedal with great brakes. No complaints here

Dean, Those are all used parts, but the rotors are perfect. New discs cost about $100 here

I also had to do all the calcs and drawings for the mods. The rear calipers need machining and sleeving to fit the different PCD and bolt spacing on the SC, along with removing the old backing disc ears on your trailing arms. The orihinal floating discs are VERY expensive and difficult to get hold of so use the later 1 piece ones.

I got my rear 930 calipers already machined from DC automotive...they are WAY cheaper then the other places...

if you want convenience go with the vendors...if you want to spend a 1/3 of what they charge...you can find the parts yourself

Nick,
I paid $900 for a good set of calipers. I paid $450 to mach them. I also went with new floating rotors from Porsche $250 each.

As I said, there are deals out there but they are few and far between. Add in the time you need to spend scrounging around(try putting a price on that)

If you want brakes next week buy a kit, if you want to save some cash look for a deal.

Hey Bill,
You are right about the cost of time. I do like to spend the time planning and scrounging because I am insane and we have very long winters. And the planning helps to keep the insanity in check
