You have to open the DME and look at it.

When you actually look at the chip it may have an identifying sticker on it and there is no guarantee that what is written on it is accurate. The part number of the chip itself is not useful because they are all generic writable chips. It is what is written to the chip that is important.

Pull the box out from under the seat, check the tabs to see if its been opened in the past. That's a good indication that the chip is still the factory chip.
I opened mine and could tell it was never opened before.

If it has been opened, then open it back up by carefully bending the metal tabs back to get the bottom to fall out.

Hopefully the chip has a serial # on it... and you could probably contact Steve Wong to see if maybe he has a record of what that chip is programmed for.

The DME isn't really an intelligent engine management system. It reads the various sensors and from that input it looks up the ignition advance and amount of fuel to use.

The one additional thing that is contained in the later (28 pin chip) DMEs like your 89 is an upgraded program to calculate all of it. In the 24 pin DMEs the program was hard coded in the processor. With the 28 pin chip they set a jumper that just says, "Ignore the built in program and use the one on the ROM chip."
